Southern Nazarene wins GAC Tournament title - Mar 6, 2018
Southern Nazarene completed the winningest season in Great American Conference history by rallying late in the second half to defeat Arkansas-Monticello, 62-57, in Sunday's GAC Men's Basketball Championship final from Bruin Fieldhouse. Trailing 49-41 with less than eight minutes remaining, Southern Nazarene (27-2) ripped off 18 of the next 21 points, culminating in a thunderous, two-hand slam dunk from Tournament MVP Jhonathan Dunn (6'4''-G-98). Dunn finished with 15 points, 11 of which came in the second half. For the GAC Championships, he averaged 21.7 points. Micah Speight (5'10''-PG) matched Dunn's scoring output with 15 points. He made a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute of the first half that pulled the Crimson Storm to within two points of the Weevils (19-12) entering halftime. Noah Starkey (6'11''-C-97) also garnered All-Tournament honors thanks to his consecutive 20-point performances in the quarterfinal and semifinal wins. With the victory, the Crimson Storm broke the GAC's single-season record for wins. Arkansas Tech posted a 26-6 record in 2011-12. They are also assured of establishing the league's standard for win percentage in a season. Hill led the Weevils with a game-high 20 points. He earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team after averaging 22.0 points on 56.8 percent shooting. Cobe Goosby (6'5''-G) made the eight-man team for the second-straight year. He notched double-doubles in both of UAM's wins and averaged 11.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.3 assists. The rest of the All-Tournament Team consisted of Southeastern Oklahoma State's Kevin Buckingham (6'6''-F-97) and Adam Dworsky (5'11''-G) as well as Northwestern Oklahoma State's Brandon Green (6'2''-G-95).
