In its second year, Dalton State of Georgia
wins NAIA title -
Mar 25, 2015
Dalton
State defeated Westmont 71-53 in the 78th NAIA Tournament national
championship game. Not bad for a program in its second year. The
Roadrunners of Dalton, Ga., re-introduced men's basketball along with
several other sports in 2013 after a 35-year absence, and the school
savored its first national title in any sport. The hugs started with the
mass substitutions in the final seconds and continued with a midcourt
celebration with players and cheerleaders moments after the final
buzzer. The championship T-shirts were passed out, photos with trophies
snapped and the nets were cut. The triumph didn't come without some
tense moments. The Roadrunners, 32-4, saw a 16-point halftime whittled
to 50-44 with 6 minutes remaining. But Roadrunners point guard Sean Tate (5'8''-PG) hit his first shot of the game, a
straight-ahead three-pointer, and
Anthony Hilliard (6'0''-G) followed with a drive in transition to
restore a double-digit lead. Dalton State's top weapon throughout the
evening was
Jordan Bowling (6'6''), who finished with 18 points, a definitive
response to his two-point effort in Monday's semifinal victory. Bowling
was named the tournament's most valuable player. 'I felt like I let my
team down,' Bowling said. 'I had to come out and prove it tonight. I
just happened to score. My main focus was playing defense.' Westmont
also was bidding for its first championship in its 18th appearance at
the national tournament. The Warriors of Santa Barbara, Calif., 25-11,
made the most of their stay _ a first title game appearance _ after a
scary arrival. The team's connecting flight blew a tire shortly after
takeoff and had to return to the Denver airport. Westmont, which got 17
from Cory Blau , couldn't overcome a poor shooting game, 18 of 60 (30
percent), including six of 32 on threes. Dalton finished fast Tuesday.
Then again, everything about the program has moved rapidly over the past
few years. When basketball was previous played at the school located
between Atlanta and Chattanooga, Tenn., Dalton was a junior college, and
among its players then was
Tony Ingle . In 2012, Ingle was hired to restore the program, and it
was the perfect fit. Ingle knew the territory and understood the
history. His goal was to win early and often. To do that, he needed
talent immediately and mostly mined community colleges. The team's top
three scorers started at two-year schools. The Roadrunners' top big man,
Ladaris Green (6'10''-F), transferred from Savannah State, a
Division I program where Ingle served as head coach from 2000-2011, and
won the NCAA Division II title in 2004. It hurt that Dalton was unable
to compete for a conference or NAIA title in its first year under
organization rules, but when the team compiled a 26-4 record, Ingle knew
he had a special group returning for this season. 'They trusted us,'
Ingle said. 'I sold them on the idea that winners are known for what
they give and champions are known for what they give up.' There isn't
much Ingle, who has coached at the NCAA, NAIA, junior college and high
school level in Georgia, hasn't accomplished in the game. He even has a
winless season on his resume. That happened at Brigham Young. Ingle was
serving as an assistant in 1996-97 when the head coach was fired. He
coached the final 19 games, losing them all, prompting a 'knock knock'
joke from is son, Israel, that Ingle uses on the motivational speaking
circuit.Courtesy of: kansascity.com

Shane Butler (6'1''-G) of Blue Mountain (Miss.) scored a game-high 21 points to lead the NAIA Division I All-Stars to a 100-96 win over the NAIA Division II All-Stars, Saturday evening in the 2nd annual NABC-NAIA All-Star Game in Municipal Auditorium. The event was staged in conjunction with the 2015 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship. Butler was named the NABC-NAIA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player, hitting 7-of-12 shots from the field that included 4-of-8 from three-point range. He also connected on 3-of-4 free throws and dished out three assists in the winning effort. The Division I team, deemed 'Team Lamar' for its head coach, MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) head coach and NAIA Hall of Famer Rocky Lamar, held a 49-47 halftime lead after an opening 20 minutes that included five ties and seven lead changes. Marty Wilkerson (5'9''-PG-92) of St. Gregory's put Team Lamar in front with 1:39 left in the half, driving to the basket for his only points of the half. The Division II All-Stars, coached by NAIA Hall of Fame and Oregon Tech head coach Danny Miles , turned a 54-51 deficit at the 16:40 mark of the second half into a 61-54 advantage less than 2:30 later thanks to 10-straight points. Adam Arciniega (6'7''-G/F) sparked Team Miles with a pair of baskets in transition, four of 52 points scored in the paint by the squad. The lead grew by a point with 13:14 remaining before Team Lamar responded with 11-straight points to regain the lead, 69-66. Butler started the run with a basket and scored the last five points that included a three-pointer with 9:45 to play. Team Miles regained the lead once more, a three-point play by Demetrius Perkins (6'3''-G) with 1:07 to play, but Phillip Miller (6'0''-PG) scored on back-to-back possessions for Team Lamar to take back the lead for the final time. Miller chipped in with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals for Team Lamar, while Russell Byrd (6'7''-F) delivered 14 points and seven rebounds. Five other players had at least eight points, led by Cameron Lewis (6'1''-G) with nine points. Seven players posted double-digit scoring totals for Team Miles, led by Eric Thompson (6'8''-F) with 15 points to go along with eight rebounds. Perkins and Arciniega each had 14 points and combined for 13 rebounds, while Tim Mitchell added 13 points and four rebounds. Deforest Carter (6'1''-G-93) also dished out a game-high seven assists. The NABC-NAIA Men's Basketball All-Star Committee determined the selection criteria and oversaw the selection process. The All-Stars were seniors in eligibility status and were open for submission by head coaches in 101 Division I schools and 133 Division II schools. Selection criteria took into account season statistics, awards and a champions-of-character aspect. The Committee is comprised of coaches from both Division I and Division II ranks. Kyle Steigenga leads Cornerstone to NAIA
national title -
Mar 18, 2015
Kyle Steigenga (6'6''-F) put a stunning exclamation point on his
freshman season at Cornerstone University. Steigenga scored 14 points
and grabbed 10 rebounds, powering the Golden Eagles to the NAIA Division
II national championship on Tuesday, March 17. Cornerstone defeated
Dakota Wesleyan 66-45 in the championship game at the College of the
Ozarks. This is why Steigenga, a Holland native, came to Cornerstone. "I
wanted a chance to win a championship and I couldn't have been happier
with my decision," he said. "It is incredible. It is hard to describe.
Someone stepped up every game. It was incredible to go out and win it.
It didn't really sink in the entire game. It is starting to sink in that
we won." It is the third national championship for the Cornerstone men's
basketball team, which held an opponent to the lowest total in NAIA
tournament history. The Golden Eagles (33-5) soared to a 42-20 halftime
lead. "It is just an awesome feeling," Cornerstone coach
Kim Elders said. "This one is really special. It means everything."
Steigenga was an all-state basketball and football player at Holland
Christian. he was The Holland Sentinel Co-Boys Basketball Player of the
Year last season. This season, Steigenga was Cornerstone's leading
scorer and named the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Newcomer of
the Year. He was a first-team All-WHAC selection. Steigenga had 14
points and seven rebounds at halftime. He scored two baskets early to
spark a 12-3 run to open the game. He was 7-for-7 from the field in the
opening half. He added two baskets late in the half, putting the Golden
Eagles up 38-20. "I got the ball in the right spots and I was
finishing," Steigenga said. Dakota Wesleyan focused Steigenga in the
second half, which opened up teammate
Ben Lanning (6'8''-F). Lanning scored 24 points and grabbed 10
rebounds as the Golden Eagles maintained their double-digit lead the
entire second half. "Ben has had a great tournament. He really carried
us in the second half," Elders said. Zeeland's
Tyler Smith (6'4''-F) had two points off the bench for Cornerstone.
