Georgetown Downs SAGU to Earn Second National Title, 88-62 - Mar 22, 2013 ![]() KANSAS CITY, Mo. - (Box score) No. 13-seeded Georgetown (Ky.) dominated play in the second half to capture its second national championship in program history, posting an 88-62 win over sixth-seeded Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at the 2013 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship in Kansas City, Mo. "SAGU is a good team, they just couldn't make shots," said Georgetown head coach Chris Briggs . "We guarded them; we got a lot of contested shots. They are a good team; otherwise they would not be in the championship game. You expect them to come back and make a run at you and our guys were tough enough to hold them off and I couldn't be happier for them." The Municipal Auditorium crowd was treated to a game between the team with the most appearances in tournament history and fifth showing in the title game in Georgetown, matched up against SAGU, a team making just its second trip to the championship and first-ever berth in the title contest. The Lions raced out of the gate with the kind of start a team with no championship game experience would want, scoring the first five points in the opening 95 seconds and forcing a pair of early turnovers to set the tempo. Georgetown settled the early nerves and scored the next eight points to claim a lead that would never be relinquished. The Tigers ran off a 17-2 spurt overall to grab a 17-7 lead at the midway point of the half. SAGU would swing the pendulum back in its favor with an 8-0 run of its own, sparked by a pair of three-pointers by Dominique Rambo (5'10''-G). The momentum would quickly swing back, however, and Georgetown would reclaim a double-digit advantage before settling for a 33-26 halftime advantage. Georgetown would see its lead drop to six points early in the half, but maintained its distance from SAGU. The Tigers used a 14-2 run over the next 4:16 to stretch their seven-point lead into a 61-42 cushion with 8:56 remaining. Instead of resting on its laurels, Georgetown continued to look to finish off the game and stretched the lead to 28 points inside the final five minutes. The 26-point margin was the largest in a championship game since the 1977 title game was decided by a 71-44 ledger for Texas Southern over Campbell (N.C.). Georgetown dominated the game on the glass, collecting a 61-31 rebounding advantage, while limiting SAGU to 28.6 percent shooting for the game (24-of-84) on the way to 46 defensive boards. Three players posted double-digit rebounding totals for the Tigers, led by Vic Moses (6'6''-F) and Allan Thomas (6'4''-G) with 13, while Montavious Marc (6'9''-F) collected 12 rebounds. The Tigers shot 73.1 percent in the second half (19-of-26) with three of the misses coming on four three-point attempts. Georgetown knocked down 16-of-19 free throws after intermission and finished the game 20-of-25 at the line to go along with a 58.2 percent overall field goal mark. About the only black mark on the Georgetown resume in the game was a total of 24 turnovers that SAGU turned into 22 points. Tournament MVP Monty Wilson (6'4''-G) shared game-high scoring honors with 23 points, hitting 9-of-13 from the field and 3-of-4 three-point attempts. He also tallied six rebounds and three assists. Moses, Deondre McWhorter (6'8''-F) and Garel Craig (6'3''-G) chipped in 14 points apiece, while Thomas added 12 points, six assists, two blocked shots and two steals. Dominique Rambo recorded 23 points and seven rebounds to lead the way for SAGU, which committed just five turnovers, but finished 8-of-32 (.250) from three-point range and missed 10 of its 16 free throw attempts. Caleb Gentry (6'0''-G) tossed in 15 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Lions. Georgetown closed its season at 28-8 and improved to 59-30 all-time in 32 national tournament appearances. SAGU ended its season at 33-5 overall and fell to 4-2 in two appearances at the National Championship. Courtesy of NAIA All-NAIA D1 Awards 2012-2013 - Mar 22, 2013

Cardinal Stritch Wins the National Championship - Mar 13, 2013 Wolves
claim its first ever national title POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. (Box Score) - #2 Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) won its first ever national championship, earning a 73-59 win over top-seed William Penn (Iowa) in the championship game of the 2013 NAIA Division II Men's National Basketball Championship. Riding a 21-point, 7-rebound performance behind championship most valuable player Darren Moore, Cardinal Stritch went on an 8-0 run to go up 45-36 with just under 15-minutes to. Moore scored the final basket of the first half to put his team up 39-36 at the break and then began the second half with four of the Wolves first six points. "Coming out in the second half, I knew I had to play better," commented Moore. "We knew as a team that we could play better and our entire team really came together, stayed under control and played our basketball in the second half to overcome a tough opponent." Just like in its semifinal win over Indiana University Southeast, Cardinal Stritch picked it up defensively in the final 20 minutes, holding William Penn scoreless for the first six minutes and to just three field goals over the opening 10 minutes. CSU limited the Statesmen to a mere 22% from the field and 15% (3-for-20) from the three-point line in the second half. Despite the long scoring drought to start the second half, William Penn kept it close until the final minute. A thunderous dunk followed by a three-pointer by Keith Steffeck (6'7''-F-89) put the Statesmen within four, 49-45, at the nine-minute mark. Cardinal Stritch responded with five straight points, three by Moore including a nifty left-handed hook in the lane to put the Wolves back up 54-45. A DDerek Semenas (6'3''-G) three-pointer put Cardinal Stritch up 10 and a Tony Smit jumper followed giving the Wolves a 61-49 advantage with under four minutes to play. William Penn cut it to six behind another three-pointer by Steffeck and they were still within six (65-59) on two free throws by Brandon Beasley (6'5''-F-88) but CSU scored the final eight points to secure the title. As they did throughout the entire championship, Cardinal Stritch shot very well from the field, going 50% in the title game. Mike Simpson came off the bench to score 13 points and Jeremy D'Amico scored all 12 of his points in the first half. Semenas added 11 points and seven rebounds. "Winning this championship is really a testament to our team and the guys that are here," said Cardinal Stritch head coach Drew Diener. "I am just so proud of our team and what they have accomplished, especially against so many quality opponents." William Penn shot a tournament low 32% from the field and just 19% (6-for-32) from the three-point line. Beasley closed out his Statesmen career with a 23 point, eight rebound effort. The senior finished the tournament with 66 rebounds, second most in championship history. Steffeck added 12 points despite missing most of the first half with foul trouble. William Penn had its 20-game win streak snapped and end the year with a 34-2 overall record. The first half was very close and featured eight lead changes and four ties. William Penn went on a 9-2 run and led 25-20, its largest lead of the game, with seven minutes to go. Following a television timeout, Cardinal Stritch came back with an 11-4 run, capped by a D'Amico three-pointer, and went up 37-31 on a jumper by Semenas. The Statesmen mounted a rally and got within one after a Taylor Stoutner three-pointer, before Moore ended the half with a basket to put Cardinal Stritch on top 39-36. Cardinal Stritch closed out its season with 15 straight wins and ends with a 35-3 overall record. Courtesy of NAIA All-NAIA D2 Awards 2012-2013 - Mar 14, 2013
