D1: Concordia mounts big rally, wins NAIA
tournament -
Mar 21, 2012Concordia (Calif.) University performed the impossible at the NAIA Division I mens basketball tournament. Again. In 2007, the Eagles won a memorable four-overtime semifinal, only to lose in the championship game. This time, fourth-seeded Concordia came away with the title by beating second-seeded Oklahoma Baptist 72-69 on Tuesday night at Municipal Auditorium despite falling behind 16-1 in the first five minutes of the game. Concordia, 31-7, got back into the game with a swarming defense that forced 12 first-half turnovers and a balanced scoring attack featuring four players in double figures, including 16 by center Tommy Granado (6'10''-C-88) and 11 by guard Cameron Gliddon (6'5''-G-89), the tournaments MVP for as much as he did on defense Tuesday as he did averaging 18.4 points for the five games. Concordias first championship since 2003 wasnt assured until the final seconds as NAIA Player of the Year Emmanuel Wilson's (6'3''-G-89) three-pointer was partially blocked by the Eagles Austin Simon with 9.1 seconds left. Oklahoma Baptist got the rebound and called time out, but Bison guard Heath McKays three-pointer glanced off the rim at the buzzer as a crowd of 3,787 exhaled. I felt like I got fouled, but they didnt call it, said Wilson, who finished with 16 points. I got a good look . Gliddon, who hounded Wilson into a five-for-14 shooting night, fouled out with 4:17 to play and Concordia leading 65-55. The Bison rallied to within 70-69 on Wilsons deep three with 1:19 to play and a drive by Jacobi Isham with 34 seconds left. Simon hit two free throws with 26.3 seconds, leaving Oklahoma Baptist, 32-5, a final opportunity to send it to overtime. Then he got his hands in Wilsons face but deflected the three-pointer. I knew my team needed a stop, the game was on the line we didnt come this far to lose, Simon said. We came here to win a national championship by any means possible. Oklahoma Baptist, the 2010 NAIA champion, came out blazing, making its first five shots, including a pair of three-point plays and led 16-1 before Granado scored Concordias first basket on a layup with 15:11 to play in the first half. It wasnt pretty at the start, said Concordia coach Ken Ammann . We were a little concerned after the first three minutes, but our guys had so much heart. I told them its a long game, the earlier you get down, the more time you have to come back. We didnt panic. What an incredible comeback. Oklahoma Baptist was playing without second-leading scorer and leading rebounder Deangelo McIntosh (6'7''-G/F), who suffered a knee injury in the semifinals, but junior Marques Anderson (6'7''-F), in his first start, scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds. When Anderson was called for an offensive foul with Oklahoma Baptist trailing 51-48, it took away a basket from the Bison, and Gliddon responded with consecutive three-pointers for a 57-48 lead. Gliddon soon picked up his fourth and fifth fouls in a three-minute span and watched the final 4 minutes clutching a towel on the bench while his replacement, Donnell Phifer, threw away one pass but then scored on a drive that gave Concordia a 69-64 lead and enough cushion for the second NAIA championship in its history. This one feels so special, because it had been so long, said mmann, whose team lost in championship games in 2004 and 2007. I didnt know if we could win another one. You start to doubt, its been 10 years. So this one feels very, very sweet. Courtesy of www.kansascity.com All-NAIA D1 Awards 2011-2012 - Mar 30, 2012

D2: Oregon Tech wins the title
- Mar 14, 2012Oregon Tech pulled a stunner, as far as a No. 2 seed goes, and won the NAIA Division II Tournament championship on Tuesday night, demolishing Rollie Massiminos top-seeded Northwood (Fla.) Seahawks 63-46 in Point Lookout. The surprise was that the Owls (34-4) held the Seahawks 39 points below their scoring average, overcoming a 19-18 halftime deficit by outscoring Northwood 45-27 in the second half. After halftime, the Seahawks made only 7 of 23 shots and Oregon Tech made 18 of its 27, good for 67 percent. It was the third D-II national title since 2004 for Oregon Tech, which received 20 points from guard Bobby Hunter, 16 from Jason Gamblin (6'6''-F) and 11 from David Clarke. The Owls also denied Massimino, 77, of his first national title since he coached Villanova to an upset of Patrick Ewing and Georgetown for the 1985 NCAA Tournament title. Northwood had across-the-board talent this season. But guard Jonathan Dunn (6'4''-G), who scored 31 points in a semifinal win against McPherson (Kan.) on Monday night, was only 3 of 13 for nine points. Point guard Tyrone Davis (5'6''-G) scored 19 points. But the Seahawks other usual scorers, 6-foot-8 Masse Doumbe (6'8''-F-87) and 6-7 Patrick Horstmann (6'7''-F-87), finished with only six and seven points, respectively, although Doumbe snared 10 rebounds. The victory was Oregon Techs eighth consecutive. Courtesy of www.news-leader.com All-NAIA D2 Awards 2011-2012 - Mar 30, 2012
