York College wins 2016-17 KCAC championship - Mar 3, 2017

The York College men's basketball team defeated Southwestern College, 109-104 in overtime on Monday night inside Hartman Arena to win its first ever KCAC Men's Basketball Championship.
Early in the first half, a three-pointer by Chris Smith (6'0''-G) gave York a 6-4 lead. A layup by Cameron Coleman (6'6''-SF) on the next offensive possession forced Southwestern to take a timeout with the Panthers leading 8-4 at the 17:07 mark. Another bucket by Cameron Coleman (6'6''-SF) capped a 6-0 Panther run, as the stretched their lead to 10-4. A Myron Fisher (6'1''-G) three cut the York lead to 10-7 at the first media timeout.
A three-pointer out of the media timeout by the Builders tied the game at 10. Later, an old-fashioned three-point play by Tre Howe (5'10''-G) put the score at 16-14 Panthers, as the two-seed started another run.
York's Johnny Cooksey (5'11''-G) connected on a three midway through the first half to give his team a 25-16 advantage. One minute later, with just under 10 minutes to go in the half, Keith Mack (6'5''-F) completed another three-point play for the Panthers to stretch their lead to 30-18. The Builders started to slowly chip away at their deficit and two free throws by Cameron Hunt (6'3''-G) put the York lead at 33-23.
Southwestern's Hunt eventually cut the Panther lead to single digits, 35-26, with a three-point play of his own with 6:40 remaining in the half. Later, Hunt connected on a shot from behind the arc to bring the Builders within five, 40-35.
The Panther would not go away easily, scoring five consecutive points to put their advantage back to ten, 45-35 with four minutes to-go in the half. Still down 10 with a little less than a minute remaining in the first half, Southwestern scored five-straight points, including a three by Jacob Horsch (5'10''-PG), to cut the York lead to 51-46 at the break.
Coleman led the York offense in the first half with 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Hunt and Dj Wallace (6'4''-F) scored 17 and 12 points, respectively for Southwestern. As a team, the Builders shot 16-for-27 (.593) including 4-for-9 (.444) from three-point land while York shot 21-for-45 (.467) from the field and 6-for-19 (.316) from three.
The Panthers hit back-to-back threes to open the half and scored the first eight points of the half to put their lead at 59-46 with 17:25 remaining in the game. A Southwestern three by Jacob Horsch (5'10''-PG) at the 15:57 mark halted the York run.
Later, a Kameron Malbrough (5'9''-PG) for the Panthers put York's lead at 10 again, 66-56. Hunt would not let Southwestern die, as his old-fashioned three-point play cut the York lead to 72-64 at the 9:24 mark. Hunt's three two minutes later pulled the Builders within four, 76-72.
With 4:40 remaining in regulation, Jacob Horsch (5'10''-PG) hit a three to cut the York lead to five yet again, 82-77. A Panther three made it 85-77, but the Builders answered with free-throws to pull within four, 85-81, at the 3:21 mark. Seconds later, Barrington Hunter nailed a three from behind the arc to pull Southwestern with two, 86-84. With less than two minutes remaining in regulation, two free throws by Cameron Hunt (6'3''-G) tied the game at 86, and the Builders took the lead on a layup by Wallace. Hunt's runner in the paint with 33 seconds to-go in the second half gave the Builders its biggest lead of the game, 90-86.
In the final seconds of regulation, two free throws by Cooksey and a three-pointer by Michael Johnson (6'6''-G/F) after Wallace hit 1-of-2 free throws for the Builders tied the game at the end of regulation and sent the Championship game to overtime.
Wallace opened overtime with a reverse layup for Southwestern to put them ahead, 93-91. Cooksey answered with a three to give Panthers the lead, and the teams traded baskets for much of the overtime period. Later, Cooksey hit yet another three for the Panthers to break a 100-all tie. York never surrendered the lead and won the game 109-104.
Southwestern's Hunt led all scorers with 36 on 11-of-17 shooting from the field, 2-of-5 from three-point range,and 12-of-16 from the free throw line. Wallace added 31 points, eight rebounds, and five assists in the game, while Horsch added 18 points for Southwestern. The Builders shot 51.7 percent (31-of-60) from the field, 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from beyond the arc, and 77.5 percent (31-of-40) from the free throw line.
Cooksey led the Panthers with 23 points on 7-of-18 shooting from the field, including 3-of-8 from three and 6-of-8 from the line. Coleman led the team with 10 rebounds to go along with 20 points, while Mack added 15 points for the Panthers. As a team, York shot 45.5 percent (40-of-88) from the field, 37.1 percent (13-of-35) from three-point range, and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) at the line.
