Morningside Wins 2024-25 GPAC Men's Basketball Tournament Championship-Mar 6, 2025
Fourth seed Morningside jumped out to an early lead and claimed the championship of the 2025 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men's Basketball Tournament over two seed Concordia 87-77 on Tuesday night in Seward, Nebraska.
Morningside secured the second automatic berth in the NAIA National Tournament. Dordt has the first automatic bid for the league by way of winning the regular season championship.
Daniel Brocaille (6'5''-F) led the Mustangs with 28 points on 9-16 shooting from the floor. Joey Skoff (6'3''-G) had 13 and Aidan Vanderloo (6'1''-G) 10 for Morningside.
Noah Schutte (6'4''-F) paced the Bulldogs with 22, while Tristan Smith (6'5''-F) had 13.
Fourth seed Morningside reached the final with a semifinal win over #1 Dordt 109-106 in overtime, while two seed Concordia defeated three seed Northwestern 67-61.

Tristan Smith, forward from the Concordia University, Nebraska, was named the Player of the Year at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. He received multiple other awards, was voted the Defensive Player of the Year and was selected to the First Team. With Smith's excellent performance, the Concordia University, Nebraska achieved the best record of the season in the league, finishing with an impressive 23 to 5 in the regular season. Smith averaged almost 20 points and over 8 rebounds per game in the league. He has totalled 12 games of 20 or more points on the year and recorded 30 or more points in 4 games. Smith registered double-doubles in 9 games during the event. His 48 points against the Midland were the most he scored in the 24 25 season. Smith's team won the GPAC Tournament in 2022.
Jesse Van Kalsbeek, from the Northwestern College, IA, was selected as the Freshman of the Year of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. He was also chosen to the First Team. Joey Skoff, guard from the Morningside College, was named to the First Team of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
