No. 7 RMU Illinois Defeats No. 11 Trinity International to Claim CCAC Men's Basketball Tournament Title - Mar 3, 2017
The seventh ranked and top seeded Robert Morris Illinois Men's Basketball team defeated 11th ranked and second seeded Trinity International University by the score of 92-77 to win the CCAC Conference Tournament championship on Monday, February 27th at the RMU Athletic & Convocation Center. This is the 12th CCAC Tournament title for the Eagles and Head Coach Al Bruehl , who was coaching in his final home game of his career as he is retiring at the end of this season. RMU broke a 4-4 tie early in the game on a Dallis Flowers (FR/Oak Park, Ill.)' tip-in and the Eagles opened a 10-4 lead just under three minutes into the contest. The Eagles would hold the lead for the remainder of the title game, building a 26-14 advantage with 12:46 to go in the first half. However, the Trojans went on a 9-1 run to cut the RMU margin to 27-23 with 8:56 to go. RMU then took over, going on a 13-2 run to lead by 15 points at 40-25 and led by as many as 18 points in the half before taking a 53-37 lead into the locker room at the break. The Eagles shot 63.3% from the field, while holding Trinity International to 38.9% shooting in the period. The Eagles continued its dominance and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the entire second half, never letting the Trojans get closer than 14 points in the contest. RMU's largest lead was 24 points on two occasions and the Eagles were a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line in the second half. Antonio Levy (6'1''-G) (SR/Harvey, Ill.) led all scorers with a game-high 21 points, while five other Eagles scored in double figures. Darius Randolph (6'5''-F) (SR/Joliet, Ill.) had 18 points, LJ Booth (6'9''-C) (SR/Willowbrook, Ill.) and Markee Williams (5'10''-PG) (SR/Chicago, Ill.) both scored 13 points, Dallis Flowers added 12 points, and Kyle Ward (6'2''-G) (JR/Joliet, Ill.) chipped in with 11 points in the title victory. Grant Corsi (6'5''-G/F-94) and Jeremy Carlyle (5'9''-PG) both had 14 points for the Trojans, while Henry French (6'3''-G) scored 12 points and Luke Mead (6'1''-G) added 11 points. The Eagles and Trojans were the CCAC regular season co-champions and both teams have booked their tickets, along with CCAC South Division winner Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.), to the NAIA Division II National Tournament, which will take place March 8th through the 14th at the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri. The tournament draw will take place during a live selection show at 6pm on Wednesday, March 1st and fans can access the show through the Eagle Sports Network. RMU will be making its 14th NAIA National Tournament appearance, while this will be the first appearance for both Trinity International and Calumet St. Joseph.
