WU Upsets UCM For Cal Pac Tourney Title-Mar 4, 2025
Westcliff did what no team has been able to do in 2025—defeat UC Merced. The Warriors capitalized on a cold shooting night by the Bobcats with a very efficient offensive performance of their own to earn a 64-53 win and the California Pacific Conference Men's Basketball Championship crown in Merced, Calif. With the victory, the Warriors snap a 14-game UCM win streak, take home their second Cal Pac tourney title in three years, and claim the conference's one automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship, which begins with regional games on March 14.
WU's defense disrupted UCM's offense, keeping the Bobcats from finding rhythm offensively. UCM shot only 28 percent from the floor, including 2-of-19 from the 3-point line, staying within striking distance largely due to going 23-for-30 from the free throw line. Conversely, the Warriors made 46 percent of their shots, 6-of-18 from beyond the arc, and converted the most of their 17 free throws, making 14.
WU (14-8) led by two at halftime, 31-29, but the Bobcats reeled off seven straight points—all by Cal Pac Player of the Year Cameron Brown (6'3''-G)—to jump out in front 36-31 and generating a buzz in front of the hometown fans. UCM (20-6) kept WU off the scoreboard for over five minutes into the half, but that drought was ended with Marques Sales (6'7''-F)' dunk and began a 14-0 run by the Warriors that gave them a lead they would never relinquish. UCM went almost six minutes without a score.
The Bobcats did make a run late in the game. Trailing by 12, four straight free throws cut WU's lead to eight, 51-43, with 5:08 to play, and then a reverse layup from Brown cut the deficit to six with 4:33 left. The Warriors responded with a slicing layup from Micaiah Hankins and a 3-pointer from Jeramiah Paulino (5'10''-PG) to push the lead back to nine, 56-47. UCM's Aidan Sevilla (6'0''-PG) made a layup and Josiah Ajiake (6'5''-G) buried an open triple to make it 56-52 with under two minutes remaining. Back-to-back Bobcat turnovers, culminating in another dunk from Sales with 1:01 sealed the win.
Paulino led the Warriors with 18 points, Hankins added 17, and Rayven Turner (6'6''-G) contributed 11 points and five steals. Evan Hoosier (6'9''-F-2000) led the team with nine rebounds.
Brown finished with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Sevilla added 11 points.
