UAV Wins Fourth Cal Pac Tourney Title-Mar 5, 2024
Monday's California Pacific Conference Championship finale between top-seeded Antelope Valley and #3 Saint Katherine started as a win-win situation for both teams, but the title game quickly became a no-win situation for the Firebirds as the Pioneers took control early and then cruised to a 99-76 win in Merced, Calif. UAV, the regular season champion, claimed the Cal Pac tournament crown as well. Because the Pioneers had already secured the first of two automatic bids for the NAIA National Championship, the tournament runner-up was guaranteed the second qualifying bid, so the Firebirds knew going in that they would be advancing to the national stage along with UAV. In what may be its final campaign in the Cal Pac, UAV (26-4) earned its fifth conference title in the last eight seasons, its fourth tournament crown since 2018, and its fourth appearance in the NAIA Championship. The Firebirds (23-8) advance to their second straight trip to the national tournament. UAV raced out to a 49-30 halftime lead after a foul-plagued first half. The two teams combined for 31 fouls, 46 free throws, and five players finished the opening 20 minutes with three fouls. But the Pioneers connected on over 53 percent of their shots while limiting the Firebirds to just 23.3 percent, making just 7-of-30 field goals. USK came out of the intermission with a purpose, cutting a 19-point deficit down to 11, 55-44, on Dorian Harris (6'6''-F-2000)' tip in four minutes into the period. UAV responded with a Michael Hayes (6'4''-G) jumper, a layup from CJ Robinson (6'2''-G), and a Virgil Mahoney (6'7''-F) bucket over the next two minutes to push the lead back to 17, 61-44. USK got to within 10 points, 67-57, at the 11:20 mark, but the Pioneers responded with a 13-4 run over the next four minutes to push the lead back to 19, 80-61. The Firebirds kept bending but finally broke when Christian Taylor (6'4''-G) and Rodney Ray (6'6''-G) hit back-to-back layups to push the lead to 21, 80-59, and UAV never looked back. Ray came off the bench to post a game-high 21 points, hitting 8-of-12 shots from the floor. Arik Nicholas (6'5''-PF) added 17 points and seven rebounds, Hayes finished with 15 points and six boards, Robinson chipped in 13 points with five assists, and Taylor had 10 points. USK had four players in double digits: Chris Harper (6'3''-F-1997) (16), Tampa Scott (5'10''-PG) (15), Harris (14), and Xavier Cooper (6'3''-F) (13), who also grabbed a game high 10 rebounds.
