Champions! Mustangs win second AMC Tournament title in blowout! - Mar 11, 2021
Looking to capture their second American Midwest Conference Tournament championship in the last three years, Central Baptist College men's basketball took on the Cougars of Columbia College tonight in the AMC Tournament finals at Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (19-6) accomplished their goal, racing out to a 20-2 lead in the first 8:05 of the game and cruising to an 89-54 win over CC (17-7)."Man, credit to our guys," said head coach Clint Galyean after the game. "They came out from the get go and we challenged our fans. They were out in full force. We talk about it all the time how much we take pride in protecting Reddin. Our fans brought the energy. These seniors stepped up. We talked about how important the first five minutes were and in the first eight minutes it was 20-2. We really guarded and executed offensively throughout the game. 18 assists and 11 turnovers and then when you shoot 60 percent and hold the other team to 36, we dominated the game! We knew what was at stake. We were playing for our fourth straight trip to the National Tournament. We have one goal down and are moving onto another one!" Zach Hudson (6'8''-F) (SR/Jackson, Miss.) led the way with a career-high 25 points on 12-18 from the field. Tedrick Wolfe (6'5''-G/F) (SR/DeWitt, Ark.) added 20, Kelvin Robinson (6'2''-G-98) (SR/Little Rock, Ark.) had 16 and led the way with eight rebounds, and Brevin Brimble (5'11''-PG) (JR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) chipped in with 12. The Mustangs shot 60 percent from the field, and forced 16 turnovers while holding Columbia to just 36 percent from the floor in the win. CBC also set a new record for the largest margin of victory in an AMC Tournament final, with their 35 win breaking the previous record of 34 set back in 2012. Columbia made the first basket of the game 29 seconds into the contest and the Mustangs responded as Wolfe put CBC on the board with a jumper to tie it at 2-2. From there, CBC ran away with it, opening a 20-2 in the first 8:05 and went into the halftime break up 44-28. The Mustangs kept the tempo fast in the second half, pushing their lead out to 20 quickly and never letting it drop below 19 the rest of the game in the dominant effort.
