Cornerstone Wins MBB Conference Tournament - Mar 3, 2017
Cornerstone parlayed a five-point lead at halftime into its 10th Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Men's Basketball Tournament Title on their home court as CU defeated Aquinas 65-51. Both teams are headed to the NAIA DII National Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. from March 8-14. The Golden Eagles struggled in the opening period, as Aquinas held the conference champs scoreless for the first six minutes. The Saints built a seven-point lead midway through the half with the lead wavering between seven and four points before Cornerstone took its first lead of the game at the 2:24 mark on a three-pointer by Cory Cox (6'5''-F). Cornerstone ended the half up 29-24. CU's defense, which kept them in the game during the first half, stifled the Saints' offense in the second period, holding the visitors scoreless for a five-minute time span. By the time Aquinas scored, Cornerstone had built up a 15-point advantage. AQ got as close as eight points with 5:23 left in the game, but Michael Bradshaw (6'4''-G) answered with a three to extend Cornerstone's lead into double figures. Cornerstone, 30-3, qualifies for its 15th trip (1999-01-02-03-04-05-06-07-10-11-12-14-15-16) to the national tournament with the WHAC's first automatic berth. Aquinas earns the league's second berth for its fifth appearance (2006-07-08-09).Stat Leaders Points: Cory Cox 32 (CU); Jake Bullock (6'0''-PG) 20 (AQ) Rebounds: Kyle Steigenga 13 (CU); Jake Bullock 9 (AQ) Assists: Sam Vander Sluis 7 (CU); Jake Bullock 3 (AQ)WHAC Tournament Final: Cornerstone - Aquinas 65-51WHAC Tournament Semifinals: Cornerstone - UM-Dearborn 79-70 Aquinas - Davenport 79-77 Courtesy of WHAC
