Cornerstone Repeats as MBB Tournament Champs - Mar 4, 2015

Cross-town rivals Cornerstone and top-seeded Davenport faced off for the third time this season - this time for the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament Championship title. Third-seeded Cornerstone won the contest 78-65 to claim its second consecutive championship. Davenport receives the WHAC's first automatic berth to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship in Point Lookout, Mo. due to its first-place seeding in the conference tournament. Cornerstone receives the second automatic berth as the tournament champion.
Cornerstone jumped to an early lead with a 14-3 run to open the game. The Golden Eagles held the lead for the next 17 minutes until Davenport's Dominez Burnett (6'5''-F-92) scored 12 points in a five-minute time span to push the Panthers to a 35-32 halftime advantage.
Davenport continued its momentum into the second half building its lead to eight before Cornerstone sandwiched a jumper between a pair of three-pointers to tie the game at 44-44 with 14:46 remaining. After a couple of lead changes and a couple more ties, Cornerstone pushed ahead two minutes later on a trey from Joey Blauwkamp (6'2''-G).
Cornerstone went on an 8-2 run while holding Davenport scoreless for nearly two and a half minutes to expand its lead. Unable to close the gap any closer than three points, Davenport was forced to foul. Cornerstone was perfect from the charity stripe down the stretch to secure the win.
Burnett, the league's Player of the Year, led all scorers with 24 points for Davenport (27-6). Ben Lanning (6'8''-F) led four Golden Eagles (28-5) in double digits with 21 points.
