Florida Memorial Claims 2023-24 SUN Men's Basketball Tournament Championship-Mar 3, 2024
The second-seeded and No. 25 nationally ranked Florida Memorial upset the top-seeded and No. 21 ranked St. Thomas by a 65-61 final score in the 2023-24 Sun Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Championship.
With the win, FMU earns the league's automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament with its 24-6 overall record. The Runners-Up in STU move to 21-8 on the year and are already set to host the First and Second Round of the NAIA Tournament Friday and Saturday, March 15-16.
Florida Memorial caught the early jump in tonight's contest, going up on the Bobcats as much as 11 points. STU quickly began to chip away at the Lion lead early in the second half and took the lead back with 12:31 left in the contest. As the game winded down, the Lions found themselves down one point with 1:32 left to play. Surging, FMU drew a few fouls and went on a 7-0 scoring run. Although the home team notched a couple late free throws and layup, it wasn't enough as their crosstown rival in FMU went on to claim the 2023-24 Tournament Title by a 65-61 final score.
