Langston Claims the 2024 SAC Tournament Title-Mar 6, 2024
The Top Seeded Lions Defeat No. 2 Mid-America Christian 55-44 For the second consecutive season, the Langston University Men’s Basketball team has won the Sooner Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament title with a 55-44 victory over Mid-America Christian on Tuesday evening at the Sid Richardson Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The second-ranked team in the country finished the season with a 30-1 overall record while the Evangels wrapped up their season with a mark of 23-8. The first half was a defensive struggle as neither team was able to find their shooting form while both squads played outstanding defense against each other. The Evangels were able to open a 12-4 advantage on a Magok Manyang (6'9''-F-2002, college: N.Mexico JC) layup at the 9:03 mark of the first half but the Lions answered with an 11-2 run to end the half as Toru Dean (6'0''-PG) nailed a jumper with 2:25 remaining to give Langston a 15-14 advantage. That would be the final points scored in the half as neither team was able to score due to their defensive efforts. The second half started as a back-and-forth affair until Anthony Roy (6'5''-G-2001) drilled a triple and Cortez Mosley (6'5''-G/F) hit a jumper to give Langston a 33-26 lead with 10:40 left in the second half. The Evangels remained in the contest as Tarrence Gaines (6'4''-G/F) hit a long-range jumper to cut the deficit to 36-32 at the 8:40 mark but that is as close as Mid-America Christian would get the Lions raced out to a 9-4 run over the next 3:34 to extend the lead to 45-36 as Roy capped off the run with a three-point play. The Lions claimed the victory as Roy hit a pair of free throws with 18 seconds remaining to give Langston the 55-44 win. Roy paced the Lions with a game-high 25 points and three steals while Dean added seven markers and four rebounds. Seth Hurd (6'6''-F-1999) led the way for the Evangels with 16 points and three rebounds with Manyang chipping in with eight points and a game-high nine boards.
