Lions take SAC Tournament title with 66-51 win over John Brown - Mar 8, 2020
Southwestern Assemblies of God triumphed 66-51 over John Brown for the Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament championship Saturday at the Hutcherson Center. Southwestern Assemblies of God, ranked 13th in NAIA Division I, collected its second SAC Tournament crown in three years. The Lions (25-7) finished the weekend with wins over top-ranked Mid-America Christian and ninth-ranked John Brown. Southwestern Assemblies of God posted its first 25-win season since 2013-14. Joshua Kashila (6'3''-G) provided Southwestern Assemblies of God with 19 points and five steals. Kashila, a junior from Euless, Texas, nabbed tournament most valuable player after averaging 20.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.00 steals per contest over the tournament. Kashila boosted the Lions with 28 points in their semifinal victory. Cody Farmer (6'2''-G) supplied the Lions with 15 points while shooting 5-for-8 from 3-point range. Kentton Williams (6'7''-F) hauled in a team-high eight rebounds. Williams, a senior from Levelland, Texas, and his SAGU teammate Mitchell McMullen (5'9''-PG), a senior from San Antonio, boasted of all-tournament nods. Densier Carnes (6'6''-F), a junior from Atlanta, spearheaded John Brown with 11 points and eight rebounds. Quintin Bailey (6'7''-F-97) added 10 points, three rebounds and three steals for the Golden Eagles (28-5). Carnes made the all-tournament team with 19.0 points and 8.7 rebounds a game with 55 percent 3-point shooting during the tournament. Kiree Hutchings picked up the tournament hustle award honoree after accumulating 13.3 points, 4.0 assists and 2.00 steals a game in the tournament. John Brown raced out to an 11-0 advantage. Hutchings and Carnes nailed back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers. The Lions regrouped and took the lead on an 8-0 surge. Farmer drained consecutive treys to put Southwestern Assemblies of God in front 18-15 at the 9:23 mark of the first half. Southwestern Assemblies of God seized the lead for good with a 13-0 run that started late in the first period and lasted until early in the second. Kashila ignited the spree with eight points. Southwestern Assemblies built a 34-23 advantage with 18:33 to go. The Lions' lead grew to 24 points, 57-33, with 9:12 remaining. The SAC Tournament will return to Oklahoma City on Feb. 23-27, 2021 at the Gaulke Activity Center on the Mid-America Christian University campus.
