LSU Shreveport secures RRAC title in Madi Gras Final - Mar 3, 2022
Top-seeded and two-time defending champion LSU Shreveport held off Louisiana Christian in an all-Louisiana final at the 2022 RRAC Men's Basketball Tournament. The Pilots eclipsed the Wildcats, 69-63, in the championship game on Mardi Gras at Rapides Parish Coliseum.
With the RRAC title, LSUS booked its ticket to the NAIA national tournament as an automatic qualifer. The Pilots are now 23-7 and ranked 21st in the nation. Xavier will receive the RRAC's second automatic berth as the second-highest team in the conference in final regular season ratings. The NAIA will announce the national tournament field on Thursday.
LCU was bidding to become the first team to win the RRAC tournament as a first-year member of the conference since LSU Alexandria in 2015. The Wildcats finished at 15-14 overall including upset victories over Texas A&M-Texarkana and Xavier in the last three days.
Leondre Washington (6'0''-PG) of LSUS earned MVP honors with 25 points and nine rebounds tonight and an average of 22.3 points per game in the tournament. He received All-Tournament Team honors along with teammates Akeem White (6'7''-F) and Jeffrey Boyd (6'5''-G).
After four lead changes and two ties in the first half, it was Washington who put the Pilots ahead to stay with a half-court shot at the halftime buzzer to make it a 31-28 game. The game stayed close early in the second half until Boyd capped a 7-0 run with a three-point play for a 45-36 lead. LSUS built their biggest lead of the game at 56-45 and under eight minutes remaining.
Several minutes later, LCU cut the lead to two on a 13-4 stretch that included a three-pointer from the Wildcats' KJ Bilbo (6'4''-F). He hit another three-pointer at the 2:19 mark to close the gap to 63-61. But Trey Johnson (6'2''-G) scored on a three-point play moments later, and the Pilots pulled away from there.
Bilbo finished with 17 points to lead LCU, and RRAC Player of the Year Kae'Ron Baker (6'2''-G) finished with 15. Baker and Malik Cooper (6'3''-F) earned spots on the all-tournament team.
