Mayville State wins third-straight NSAA title with win over Waldorf - Mar 3, 2020
Second-seeded Mayville State University (N.D.) won its third-straight North Star Athletic Association Championship after defeating fifth-seeded Waldorf University (Iowa), 65-62, at the Watertown Civic Arena on Sunday. Max Cooper from Mayville State was named the tournament Most Valuable Player after the game. The Comets jumped out to a 13-4 lead early in the game. Rene Melendez (6'3''-G-96) and Jalen Valverde (5'10''-PG) added three-pointers for Mayville State in the first five minutes of the game. The Warriors fought back into the game with a 10-2 run to pull within one point. Waldorf later tied the game at 19-19. The Comets ended the first half by scoring eight of the final 11 points. Melendez hit a three-pointer to give Mayville State a 30-24 lead at halftime. Mayville State would keep rolling in the second, extending its lead to 14 points after a field goal in the paint by Thomas Gieske with 15:42 left in the game. Still trailing by 12 points with under seven minutes to play, the Warriors made a push at the Comets' lead. Waldorf cut the deficit to six points on a field goal by Gabriel Munoz (7'3''-C) with 4:33 to play. The Warriors trailed 63-54 with 0:30 remaining. Melvin Martin (5'10''-PG) hit a three-pointer with 0:20. A Mayville State turnover led to a score from Munoz to cut the lead to six with 0:10 to play. Munoz hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, but time ran out on the Waldorf comeback. Rene Melendez led the Comets with 17 points on four made three-pointers. Four players finished in double figures for Mayville State including Jalen Valverde with 15 points and five rebounds. Demitrius Martin (6'2''-G) led all scorers with 22 points on 8 of 13 field-goal shooting. Melvin Martin and Gabriel Munoz both grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. The Warriors totaled nine blocks to four for the Comets. Mayville State forced 14 Warrior turnovers, scoring 14 points off them.
