Mayville State wins NSAA title with 73-70 win over Blue Hawks - Mar 3, 2018
Mayville State University captured the 2018 North Star Athletic Association Tournament title with a hard-fought 73-70 victory over Dickinson State University Monday night at the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center. MSU (18-10) earned an automatic berth to the NAIA Men's Basketball Division II National Tournament on March 7-13 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. The selection show will take place on Wed., Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. Dickinson State ends its season with a 16-13 record. Daniel Lindgren and Gorg Alhag each scored 13 points to lead MSU, while Garek Droog chipped in with 12 and Creighton Pfau was the fourth Comet in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Terrell Butler led all players with 25 points and nine rebounds. Marcus White added 19 points and eight boards. Neither team could establish control early in the contest as the largest lead for either team was six points during the first 15 minutes of the game. After the Blue Hawks used a 9-0 run to take a 38-26 lead with 1:40 left before intermission, MSU scored the final five points of the half to slice the DSU advantage to 38-31 at the break. The first half featured four ties and seven lead changes. Butler (9), White (8), and Carter Gallo (8) combined for 25 points to lead the Blue Hawk offense in the first half. Lindgren hit 3-of-4 from behind the arc, pacing the Comets in the opening period with 13 points and two rebounds. A 19-7 run to open the second half gave MSU a 50-45 advantage with 12:07 remaining in the contest. After the Blue Hawks responded with an 8-2 spurt to regain the lead at 58-57, MSU used a 12-2 run to gain a nine-point cushion at 69-60 with 2:46 remaining. A layup and 3-pointer by Butler made it a one-point game at 71-70 with 32 ticks left in the contest. The Comets nailed two free throws to make it a three-point game and Butler missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, giving the Comets the 73-70 victory.
