Geothetown wins 2021-22 tournament with 68-59 victory over Thomas More - Mar 4, 2022
Third-seeded Georgetown (Ky.) captured the 2021-22 Mid-South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament title with a 68-59 victory over top-seeded Thomas More at Bowling Green Arena.
Georgetown (25-7) captured its 12th tournament title and first since 2020.
State Farm Insurance of Bowling Green, D C Clement, agent, is sponsoring the 2022 Mid-South Conference Outstanding Player of the Tournament Award. Georgetown's Derrin Boyd (6'4''-G) earned the award averaging 19.7 points per game and five assists.
Boyd scored a team-high 19 points while Jaquay Wales (5'10''-PG) and Cameron Brooks-Harris (6'8''-G) each scored 12 points. Kyran Jones (6'5''-F) was the other Georgetown player in double figures with 10.
Thomas More (27-4) got off to a great start scoring 12 of the first 14 points. Georgetown answered back with a 7-0 run to make it 12-9 with 12:45 to play in the first half. The Tigers trailed 17-13 before scoring the next five points to take a one-point lead. Thomas More jumped back in front with a 5-0 run of its own. With the score tied at 26 with 5:45 to play in the half, the two teams would go scoreless for the next three minutes. The two teams then exchanged points to end the half as Thomas More led 32-31.
The Tigers started the second half on a 9-2 run to take a 40-34 lead with 16:24 remaining. Thomas More answered right back scoring 10 of the next 12 points to lead 44-42 with 13:11 to play. Tied at 44, the Saints scored five of the next seven to lead 49-46 with 9:34 left in the game.
Georgetown responded back scoring the next six points to lead 52-49 with 6:16 to play. Thomas More answered with a 6-0 run of its own to go back in front 55-52 with 4:25 remaining. Georgetown then scored the next five points to lead 57-55 with 3:15 to play. After Thomas More tied the game at 57, Georgetown ended the game on an 11-2 run to secure the championship.
The Saints were led by Reid Jolly (6'5''-G/F) who scored a game-high 24 points. Ryan Batte (6'6''-C) was also in double figures with 16.
Following the conclusion of the game, Former Mid-South Conference Commissioner Mike Pollio presented the Mike Pollio Men's Basketball Tournament Championship Trophy presented by Community Trust Bank.

With the victory, Georgetown earns one of the conference's automatic bids into the NAIA National Tournament. Thomas More earned the other automatic bid by winning the regular season title.
