No. 3 Dillard rallies in Second Half to claim HBCUAC Championship-Mar 10, 2025
Dillard University men's basketball player Bentravin Phillips (5'10''-PG) came up with two steals and layups in the final two minutes to lead the No. 3 seed Bleu Devils to 74-72 victory over No. 5 Philander Smith University in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) 2025 Hope Credit Union Basketball Championship game Sunday at Birthright Alumni Hall. The victory gives Dillard its fourth conference tournament championship and first since three-peating from 2016-2018. Philander Smith (22-9) led early on two shots by Raymond Reece (6'5''-F) and Amorey Womack (6'2''-G) got a steal and scored a layup-and one to give it a seven-point lead. Justin Warren hit a jumper to give the Bleu Devils a 22-21 lead with 8:47 left in the first half. The lead changed hands multiple times. A 3-pointer by Tory Cargo (6'4''-G) gave Dillard a 34-33 lead at halftime. With the score tied at 52 with 10:31 left, Dakhari Lewis (6'7''-F/C) made a layup-and one to put the Panthers in front. Xavier Alexander (6'1''-G) hit a 3-pointer and Womack made a layup after a blocked shot by Lewis to increase the lead to eight. Armond Williams made a layup. Warren stole the ball and passed to Cargo for a dunk. Ben Fort (6'6''-G/F) hit a layup to cut the margin to 60-58 with 7:20 left in the game. Two shots by Warren gave Dillard a 65-63 lead with 4:05 remaining. Shots made by Elijah Anderson (6'3''-G), Alexander and a second-chance bucket by Lewis put Philander Smith ahead by five with 2:25 left. A dunk by Khalif Allim, a steal and score by Phillips, pulled Dillard within one. Warren tied the game with a 3-pointer with 56 seconds left. Phillips got a steal and gave the Bleu Devils the lead with a layup. Philander Smith was unable to get the tying shot off before the buzzer. Phillips earned 2025 HBCUAC Championship Most Valuable Player, posting team-highs of 18 points, six assists and three steals. Cargo earned a spot on the 2025 HBCUAC All-Tournament Team with 13 points and six rebounds. Warren earned All-Tournament, putting up 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Reece led all players with 21 points and 15 rebounds, securing a double-double. He represented Philander Smith on the All-Tournament Team. Womack followed with 15 points and four assists. Lewis supplied 11 points and four rebounds. With the victory, Dillard earns the conference's second automatic bid to the 2025 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Men's Basketball National Championship Opening Round. Stillman College earned the first by winning a share of the regular season title and earning the No. 1 seed. ![]() Jamal Gibson, forward from the Southern University - New Orleans, was voted the Player of the Year at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
He received multiple other awards, was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year, and was chosen to the First Team and was named to Honorable Mention selection.
With finesse and precision, Gibson claimed the fifth position in points per game, delivering a stellar over 23 points per game average.
Gibson led the NAIA in rebounds per game with almost 17.
He has totalled 22 games of 20 or more points on the year and recorded 30 or more points in 5 games.
Gibson registered double-doubles in 30 games during the event.
His 41 points against the Rust were the most he scored in the 24 25 season.
Doyel Cockrill, shooting guard from the Fisk University, was honored as the Newcomer of the Year of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
He was also named to the First Team.
Cockrill averaged over 19 points and almost 5 assists per game in the league.
He has totalled 13 games of 20 or more points on the year and had 30 or more points in 3 games.
Cockrill recorded double-doubles in 3 games at the event.
His 37 points against the Stillman were the most he scored in the 24 25 season.
Raymond Reece, forward from the Philander Smith College, earned a spot in the First Team at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
He collected multiple other honors, earned Honorable Mention and was voted to the Tournament Team.
Reece's court vision propelled him to the fifth spot in rebounds per game an outstanding average of almost 12.
He also logged 20 points per game that season in the league.
Reece has totalled 18 games of 20 or more points and registered double-doubles in 21 games on the year.
His 28 points against the Wiley were the most he scored in the 24 25 season.
Among many awards he was selected to the All-GCAC First Team in 2024.
He was also selected to the GCAC All-Defensive Team in 2024.
Calvin Finch, forward from the Stillman College, was selected to the First Team of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
He received multiple other awards, added Honorable Mention pick and was chosen to the Tournament Team.
Finch notched over 13 points and almost 10 rebounds per game over the season in the league.
He has totalled 4 games of 20 or more points and recorded double-doubles in 10 games on the year.
Finch's 24 points against the Rust were the most he scored in the 24 25 season.
He was selected as the All-CAC Honorable Mention in 2023.
Tory Cargo, guard from the Dillard University, was named to the First Team at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
He also earned a spot in the Tournament Team.
Cargo averaged over 14 points and 5 rebounds per game in the league.
