USK claims first Cal Pac Trophy - Mar 4, 2022
Saint Katherine pulled away from Benedictine-Mesa in the second half of the title game of the California Pacific Conference Men's Basketball Championships at Antelope Valley in Lancaster, Calif., earning the program's first conference tournament title with the 69-59 victory. Both the Firebirds (18-7) and the Redhawks (13-16) keep their postseasons alive after garnering the Cal Pac's two automatic qualification bids to the NAIA National Championship. This will be the first appearance for USK in the national tournament, and the second in a row for BENU, which was the NAIA Qualifier in last year's shortened season.
The NAIA opening round will be played at campus sites on March 11-12, with four teams traveling to assigned locations. The winners of those opening tournaments head to Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium on March 17-22 to play for the NAIA red banner. The Men's Basketball Selection Show to reveal the National Championship brackets will air on Thursday, March 3, at 5:00 pm PT on Facebook.
For the first 10 minutes of the contest, it looked like BENU might be able to pull off its third consecutive upset in the tournament. The #6 Redhawks knocked out #3 Antelope Valley and #2 Simpson, and they jumped out by as much as 11 at 19-8. But the Firebirds chipped away at that lead and quickly got back in the game, reeling off 13 unanswered points to take a 21-19 lead with 7:00 to play.
The first 20 minutes closed out in a 24-24 tie, and both offenses picked up the pace over the final 20 minutes. USK gradually pulled away, going up by 10, 52-42 with 9:45 to play. The Firebirds biggest lead was 13, 60-47, and the Redhawks repeatedly cut into that margin, but could never get closer than nine points the rest of the half because USK answered every time.
Bryan Baptiste (6'0''-PG-1994) led USK with 16 points, and Darius Jackson (5'11''-PG) added 10 points and five assists. Cesar Meza (5'11''-PG-1999) finished with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Maurice Walton (6'9''-F) topped the BENU scorers with a game-high 20 points, and both Walton and Treviance Carolina (6'1''-PG) grabbed eight rebounds.
