Sonny Weems (6'6''-G/F-86, college: Arkansas) led Colorado with 25 points and 7 rebounds last night, Josh Davis (6'8''-C/F-80, college: Wyoming) and Joe Dabbert (6'11''-C-81, agency: Sports Plus International, college: Creighton) had 21 pts each, while John Lucas (5'11''-G-82, college: Oklahoma St.) helped with 17 points. On the other side, Kevin Kruger (6'2''-G-83, college: UNLV) and Morris Almond (6'6''-F-85, college: Rice) answered with 18 pts apiece. JR Giddens contributed with double-double, 17 pts and 15 rebounds. Dominating the final 10 minutes at the Broomfield Event Center, the third-year franchise collected its first NBA D-League championship. Finishing the fourth period on a 23-13 run, the 14ers knocked off the Utah Flash 123-104. The prime mover in the deciding minutes of the second game of the three-game series: John Lucas. The smallest man on Colorado's roster, the 5-foot-11 guard drained eight of his team's final 15 shots. 'In the first half my shots weren't dropping,' the former Oklahoma State University player said. 'Coach pulled me aside and told me to keep playing hard, because everything was going to come together.' The championship was a testament to Colorado's (35-16) depth, as much as it was to the team's talent. Utah (32-18) forward Bennet Davis (6'9''-F-84, agency: KMG Sports Management, college: Northeastern) got 20 minutes off the bench, the most of any Flash player but about the average for 14ers reserves. In fact, Lucas came off the bench to shoot his way to 15 points. To top that, Colorado's leading scorer was also a reserve. Denver Nuggets assignee Sonny Weems shot 10-of-23 from the field to lead all scorers with 25 points. 'We have guys on the bench who should be starting,' said 14ers coach Bob MacKinnon, who had six players in double digits. 'Our second five would start for most teams.' The game capped what has been a successful run since Colorado's inception in 2006. There could be a bittersweet element to the finish. The team gets to call itself a champion now. It might soon call itself defunct, with the arena struggling to keep its head above turbulent financial waters. 'I hope that this championship helps save this organization,' Davis said. 'This is one of the nicest venues in the whole league. It would be a shame to not have somebody step up and keep this team going next year. a three-time GATORADE Call-Up, shared MVP honors as the Red Team defeated the
Blue Team, 113-103 in the 2009 NBA D-League All-Star Game which was played this
afternoon on Center Court at NBA Jam Session presented by adidas. Sims, a center on assignment from Phoenix with the Iowa Energy, tallied 15 points, eight rebounds and four blocks for the Red squad, which trailed 51-43 at the half. Ahearn, the third-leading scorer in the NBA D-League playing for the Dakota Wizards, scored 13 points and dished out 13 assists, while only committing two turnovers. Both players went undrafted in 2007 before catching on briefly with NBA teams during the 2007-08 season. Sims appeared in three games with the Indiana Pacers while Ahearn signed two 10-day contracts with the Miami Heat. Ahearn also earned a Call-Up to the Spurs earlier this season. My dream, since I was a little kid, has been to play in the NBA and Im going to follow it right now, said Sims. I think Im pretty close, and I just need to stick with it and hopefully Ill stay there a long time. Ahearn, who is averaging 6.0 assists this season, took home the NBA D-Leagues Three-Point Shoot-Out Championship last night at the NBA D-Leagues second annual Dream Factory Friday Night skills competition. The way I play is if somebody is open, I am going to pass them the ball, said Ahearn. At the All-Star game there are a lot of people trying to score and all that. I think we moved the ball pretty well and I think it shows that we were able to put up good points today and everybody got shots, so it went well. Bakersfields Derrick Byars added 18 points for the Red Team, while his teammate Trey Johnson (6'5''-G-84, agency: Priority Sports, college: Jackson St.), who just earned a GATORADE Call-Up to the Cleveland Cavaliers, finished with 15 points, four assists and four rebounds in the win. Renos Antonio Meeking paced the Blue Team with 17 points, while Fort Waynes Walker Russell (6'0''-G-82, college: Jacksonville St.) added 14 points and eight assists. Former NBA player Ronald Dupree of the Utah Flash finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
