Cancelation of the 2020 CCAA Championships - Mar 18, 2020
| Due to the ongoing developments in the pandemic, the Board of Directors are announcing their unanimous decision to cancel the CCAA 2020 Championship. Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, BC was supposed to host the vent from March 18-21. Langara College hosted the 2019 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Basketball National Championship. The Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) institution hosted the event in Vancouver, BC, from March 13-16, 2019. All games were held at the Langley Event Centre (LEC).
| Royals Crowned Champs - Mar 3, 2020
|
For the second time in three years the Royals are crowned PACWEST champions after an exciting 97-89 win over the Mariners after shooting 52% from the field. The Royals were strong defensively creating chances for their offence led by tournament MVP Courtney Anderson (178-PG, college: Clark JC) and his 26 points along with nine rebounds and six assists. Cameron Morris (198-G) was outstanding as well dropping in 19 points and tallying four blocks. His brother Reese had a double-double of 15 points and 10 boards. In all, nine players hit the scoresheet. Despite the outcome both teams are still heading to the CCAA national championship in two weeks hosted at Humber College in Toronto. Saturday night the Mariners pushed the top seeded Royals shooting 42% from the field led by Tyus Barfoot and his game high 28 points scoring inside, but also knocking down four-three pointers and grabbing 12 rebounds. Cameron Gay (190-F, college: Spokane CC) was strong with 22 points and Landon Radliff (183-PG, college: Walla Walla CC) finished with 18. The Mariners will head to Humber with a wildcard seed and get an opportunity to defend their national crown.

| George Brown captures first OCAA Championship in 44 years - Mar 9, 2020
|
For the first time in 44 years, the George Brown Huskies are the OCAA men's basketball champions. On Sunday afternoon inside the Lambton College Athletics & Fitness Complex, the George Brown Huskies knocked off the Humber Hawks, 78-65, to bring home the gold medal. With the win, the Huskies continued their recent of strong play, one that they hope to carry into the 2020 CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship tournament, which runs from Mar. 18-21 at Humber College. The Hawks come away with the silver medal, and now turn their attention to hosting nationals in little over a week. Guard Chris Fields (175-PG) was named as the Huskies' Player of the Game after posting 13 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals off the bench. Forward Jaylan Morgan (196-F, college: Williston St. JC) was named Player of the Game for Humber after posting a team-high 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field. The championship game was a battle between the top team from each division in the regular season. The Huskies finished the regular season atop the East Division with a 17-3 record overall, while the Hawks brought home first place in the West Division with a 15-5 record. It didn't disappoint. In each of their first two games, the Huskies found themselves trailing at the half. This time around, George Brown found their rhythm early on in the game to take a four-point lead after the first quarter. Both teams went back and forth in the second, but a pair of free throws from Derrick Taylor late sent the Huskies into the break up one, 37-36. To start the third, teams would trade baskets before a 7-0 run for George Brown stretched their lead to 10 points, at 58-48, with under two minutes left in the quarter. Humber would cut the deficit to five before the quarter was out, but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way. George Brown slowly pulled away in the fourth quarter, ultimately picking up the 13-point win and ending their 44-year drought in the process. Huskies' forward Kingslee D'Silva (201-F) was named Championship MVP for his efforts, while Naseem Barry was named Top Rookie.

| Hoopsters Repeat Provincial Title! - Mar 10, 2020
|
Cheetahs played in the Provincial Championships which were held on Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8 at Dawson College. On Saturday afternoon, they faced the home team and perennial cross-town rivals, the Dawson College Blues, and they were able to secure a relatively comfortable 90-79 victory. Although they let up a little in the fourth quarter, the Cheetahs were in control for pretty much the entire game and the result was never really in doubt. Here is Coach Andrew Hertzog 's game report: 'Our men's D1 team had its Provincial semifinal game Saturday afternoon against the host Dawson College team. We got off to a good start, taking a 21-9 lead after the first quarter. We extended the lead to 18 in the second period, but had to sit 3 players with 2 fouls each, and the Blues managed to cut our lead to 12 (40-28) going into halftime. We came out firing in the second half, opened up a 28-point advantage and coasted to a 90-79 victory, clinching a berth in the national championships as well as an opportunity to win a second straight Provincial championship. Pier-Olivier Racine (208-F) was a monster for us, scoring 21 points and taking 15 rebounds. Thierry Tshibola (190-G) had 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Haris Elezovic (203-F) had 11 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Karim Mane (196-G-00) had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Christopher Biekeu (203-F) had 10 points and 4 boards.' -Andrew Hertzog
With the Cheetahs semifinal win, they automatically qualified for the CCAA Nationals and also advanced to the Provincial Finals at 6:00 PM on Sunday evening which would be played against either Jean-de-Brebeuf or Montmorency who played in the other semi-final on Saturday evening. As it turned out, Brebeuf (15-3 season record) and Montmorency (12-6 record) battled in a game that was much closer, and they were knotted up 37-37 at the end of the half. Brebeuf took the lead 57-51 after the third quarter, and but after Momo fought back in the 4th quarter and temporarily took the lead, Brebeuf took control in the final minutes and emerged with a solid 81-71 win. Therefore, on Sunday evening, as was perhaps expected, our first-place Cheetahs faced second-place Jean-de-Brebeuf as we tried for our second consecutive Provincial title. After all was said and done, the Cheetahs came out with a tremendously hard-fought 79-74 Provincial Gold Medal victory over Brebeuf! They will next play in the CCAA National Championships which will be held from March 19-21 at Humber College in Etobicoke, Ontario. Congratulations to the entire team and to the coaching staff including Assistant Head Coach Feras Saaida , Assistant Coach Kazadi Nyanguila , and of course Head Coach Andrew Hertzog who has provided us with this championship game report: 'Our Division 1 men's basketball team was looking for its 2nd straight Provincial championship today at Dawson College. It was a much-anticipated contest, as our Cheetahs, the first place team in Quebec and ranked 5th nationally, took on the Brebeuf Dynamiques, 2nd in Quebec and 7th in Canada. Brebeuf came out firing, hitting 3 straight 3's early in the game and racing out to a 11-4 lead. We came back and took a 20-18 lead after the first quarter. We increased our advantage to 10 points in the second quarter, but Brebeuf rallied and our lead was cut to 6 (44-38) at halftime. Our lead was 10 after 3 quarters, and we increased the margin to 15, and were still leading by 14 (73-59) when Brebeuf mounted a furious comeback, going on a 13-0 run to trim our lead to a single point. Fortunately, after shooting terribly from the foul line all game long (14/26), we managed to make 4 in a row down the stretch to hold on for a 79-74 victory. Christopher Biekeu had a monster game for us with 21 points and 12 rebounds, and was named Player of the Game. Nginyu Ngala had a great 2nd half and tallied 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Karim Mane had 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Haris Elezovic had 11 points and 5 boards. Pier-Olivier Racine had 9 points and 10 rebounds. Pier-Olivier Racine was named MVP of the tournament. Christopher Biekeu and Karim Mane were both also named to the All-Tournament team. We now move on to CCAA National championships at Humber College in Toronto March 19-21. Go Cheetahs!' -Andrew Hertzog

| Gold Medalist Game, SAIT Trojans vs Ambrose University Lions of the 2020 ACAC Championships - Mar 10, 2020
|
To wrap up the final game of the 2020 ACAC Men's Basketball Championships the SAIT Trojans vs the Ambrose University Lions battle for Gold. Both teams are pumped up and ready to play the game of their lives. The score in the first quarter was rallied between the two teams as they both took turns in the lead. Half way through the quarter, the Trojans hold the lead 12-6. Ambrose calls a quick timeout to find a game plan to maintain a strong defensive zone. SAIT forces the ball out of their zone and sends it to the net with a 2 pointer, but that did not slow down the Lions as they turned around and did the same. Trojans up 23-14 at the end of the first quarter. Moving into the second quarter, the Trojans tighten up their defensive zone making it more of a challenge for the Lions. The Trojans entered the quarter with impulsion, shooting 3's and 2's which quickly added up on the scoreboard and bringing them ahead 15 points, 41-26. Trojans had more success being able to get baskets throughout this quarter but the Lions are working hard and have taken every chance they can to make a shot. At halftime, 54-32 for the Trojans. Into the third quarter, the Trojans hold their lead but the Lions are playing strong, deflecting passes shooting threes and avoiding fouls. Both teams are bringing momentum and strong competition onto the court. The Trojans with an advanced lead remained ahead 72-52 at the end of the third quarter. Entering the final quarter of the 2020 Championships, both teams continue to strategize and maintain their offensive and defensive zones. This quarter the Trojans are bearing down defensively making it a challenge for the Lions to shoot. A timeout is called by the Lions to help re-strategize their play. After entering back into the game with only minutes left on the clock, Lions got called for a few fouls. The Trojans have spread out their team amongst the court which has helped their defensemen send the ball to a forward waiting in the offensive zone to run a layup. With under a minute left on the clock the Trojans remained ahead 88-64 with the advantage of two free throws. The Gold Medalist team of the 2020 ACAC Men's Basketball Championships went to the SAIT Trojans with a score of 91-69 against Silver Medalists the Ambrose Lions. The 2020 ACAC Men's Basketball Championship Player of the Game presented by Crystal Nahajowish on behalf of Cargill was awarded to Gold Medalist Trojans player, #1 Charlie Conner (185-G) and Silver Medalist Lions player, #7 Nhial Phillip (189-G).

| Mounties make history by winning 2020 ACAA Men's Basketball Championship - Mar 10, 2020
|
The Mount Allison Mounties men's basketball program made history on Sunday by claiming the school's first ever ACAA men's basketball championship. The Mounties defeated the host MSVU Mystics 81-75 in a spirited championship game that stayed close throughout. The Mounties, who entered the championship weekend as the 2nd seed, advanced to Sunday's championship game with a 92-66 win over STU in semi-final play on Saturday. The Mounties actually trailed by 7 points at half time but dropped 62 points in the 2nd half to outscore the Tommies by 33 points and to punch their ticket to the final. Junior Aram Currie (190-G) led the Mounties offensively, going 7 for 11 from behind the 3 point line en route to 25 points in the game. The Mounties never trailed on Sunday afternoon, scoring the first two points of the game and holding a slim lead through the 1st quarter. Starting the 2nd quarter with an 18-14 lead, the Mounties began to separate a little as the quarter wore on. The Mounties would head to the locker room at halftime with a 42-31 lead. The Mounties once again started fast in the 3rd quarter, holding a 13 point lead at one point, but MSVU answered back with their biggest push of the day, an 11-0 run to move to within 2 points. That's the closest they would get as the Mounties answered with a key 3 point play from Emmanuel Octavious to stretch the lead back to 5 points. From there, the Mounties held their lead until the game's final moments. MSVU hit a 3 pointer with 14 seconds remaining to move within 4 points of the lead but two clutch free throws from Currie ended any threat of a comeback. As time ticked off the clock the Mounties stormed the court to celebrate their first even ACAA Men's Basketball Championship. Sophomore Mountie and ACAA 1st team All-star Sam Pierson (198-F) led the Mounties with 21 points to go along with 8 rebounds on the afternoon. Junior James French (196-F) had 12 rebounds and 9 points while the freshman Octavious had 16 points during 33 minutes played. Aram Currie chipped in with 14 points while Trevor Schulz, playing in his last ACAA game, had 6 points and 3 key blocks for the champions. Mounties head coach Steve Chapman was named the ACAA Coach of the Year at Friday's banquet. Chapman and his Mounties made history in 2017 when they became the first Mounties team ever to advance to CCAA Nationals. The Mounties were ACAA silver medalists that year. After losing in last year's ACAA Championship game, the Mounties returned this season to reach a new pinnacle for the program - an ACAA Championship for the first time and a return trip to CCAA Nationals. The Mounties will compete at the 2020 CCAA Men's basketball National Championship from March 19th-21st at Humber College (Toronto, ON).
