| Seneca snags first ever CCAA Men's Basketball title - Mar 18, 2018

For the first time in its history, the Seneca Sting are National Champions in CCAA Men's Basketball. The 2018 CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship gold medal game featured New Westminster's Douglas Royals and Toronto's Seneca Sting. In a fast, hard-fought first quarter, both teams put together strong offensive runs, with Douglas taking the lead 22-19 after the first quarter. In the second, the Douglas Royals resisted the Sting's repeated attacks led by Isaiah Ankra to take a 35-34 half-time lead. Seneca had a 20-point third quarter to take the lead 64-57 heading into the fourth, led by Yusuf Ali (183-G)'s 11 points. The fourth quarter saw some fast breaks and high-quality plays as both teams were hungry for the win. Midway through the quarter, the gap was down to 2 points, 71-69 for Seneca. Seneca kept the pressure on in the second half of the quarter to open up the gap and secure the win 86-73. Yusuf Ali ended the game with 25 points and 5 rebounds and was named player of the game for the Sting. Reese Morris (F) earned the award for the Douglas Royals with 20 points and 7 rebounds.

| Hurricanes Cruise to 6th Straight Championship - Mar 14, 2018

The Holland College Hurricanes took care of business in front of a packed crowd at the Langille Athletic Centre, dismantling the Crandall Chargers 100-64.
Leading the way for the Hurricanes was Roosevelt Whyley (198-F) who finished the game with a tidy 25 points and 15 rebounds.
It was a dominating effort from start to finish as the Hurricanes never trailed, jumping out to a 22-9 lead after the first quarter.
Despite some hot shooting from Treyvon David (G) in the second quarter, the Hurricanes pushed their lead to 47-27 at half.
David would finish the game with 18 points, tied for the team lead with senior Umbori Watson.
The Hurricanes controlled the tempo, and finished above the rim with regularity, cruising down the stretch.

| Sting capture OCAA Championship - Mar 14, 2018

For the first time since 1987, the Seneca Sting are the OCAA Men's Basketball Gold medal champions. The Sting secured the provincial title after defeating the Humber Hawks 74-63 in the OCAA Championship final hosted by Niagara College in Welland, Ontario from March 1-3.
Both programs clinch a spot in this year's CCAA Men's Basketball Championship located in Laval, Quebec.
The matchup featured two of the top defensive programs in the OCAA battling hard over the course of four quarters. At times throughout the back-and-forth affair, both teams seemed poised to take home the championship trophy. Both defenses stood strong, limiting the offensive chances to a minimum, but in the end Seneca's speed and tenacity proved too much for Humber.
Seneca's Yusuf Ali (183-G) (Toronto, Ont.) was an offensive catalyst for the Sting throughout the tournament. In the gold medal final, the second year standout posted a team high 32 points and 9 rebounds. His consistent production earned him the tournament's most valuable player award. Seneca's Khalil Miller (203-F), Redeemer's Rayvon Higdon (188-G/F), Sheridan's Jemol Edwards (183-PG), and Humber's Kenny Ejim (PF) and C.J. Bennett (201-F) rounded out the 2018 OCAA Championship All-Star team.
Seneca's player of the game during the gold medal contest was awarded to 1st year forward Nabil Ibraham (Richmond Hill, Ont.) who hit 2 clutch three pointers down the stretch to help his program capture the provincial gold. Ibraham finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds.
Humber's offence was led by 3rd year forward C.J. Bennett who finished with a team high 20 points. DeQuon Cascart was named Humber's player of the game after notching 15 points and adding six rebounds.
Earlier in the evening the Sheridan Bruins captured the OCAA Bronze medal, defeating the OCAA West Division champion Redeemer Royals 119-84.

| SAIT wins ACAC Championship 2018 - Mar 14, 2018

Winning a championship is tough. Winning two in a row is even tougher. But the SAIT Trojans (19-5) weren't deterred by the challenge as the club came up clutch to win its second ACAC men's basketball championship in as many years, with an 88-77 win over the Lakeland Rustlers (18-9). The victory marked the end of an entertaining week of basketball at the Cora Breakfast and Lunch ACAC Championship Tournament, hosted by Lethbridge College.
Both teams were making shots in the opening quarter, with neither side able to put any distance between themselves and their opponent. SAIT was able to take a slight 26-24 lead after ten minutes thanks to a 10-point effort by Gemie Muya-Ntalaja (F) (first year, Journalism, Toronto). The teams remained even through most of the second quarter, as the game was tied at 38 with just over two minutes remaining. But Lakeland Prentice Gardner (F) (fourth year, University Transfer, Oakland, Calif.) single-handedly broke the game open, scoring seven-straight points, including a last-second three, to give the Rustlers a 45-38 lead at the break.
Three minutes into the third quarter, Akeem Phillip (third year, Business Administration, Toronto) hit a three, pushing the Rustlers lead to 10 points. But from there, the Trojans erupted. SAIT scored 16 straight points, six of them by Muya-Ntalaja to storm ahead 57-51 late in the third. A three-pointer in the final minute by Murphy Beya (190-G) (fifth year, New Media Design and Production, Ottawa) cemented an excellent quarter for the Trojans where they outscored the Rustlers 25-12 to lead by six after three.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Rustlers put on a comeback push as a Terrell Murdaugh (fourth year, University Transfer, Saskatoon) three moved Lakeland back within two of the Trojans. But that's as close as the crew from Lloydminster would get, as Charlie Conner (G) (first year, Business Administration, Lacey, Wash.) scored five-straight points to restore the SAIT edge. Beya, the tournament MVP added the exclamation point, drilling a three with one minute remaining to clinch the Trojans victory.
Conner, a freshman, led the Trojans in scoring with 33 points, while Muya-Ntalaja finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Adrian Richards led the Rustlers with 20 points.
The championship exemplifies the return to prominence of the Trojans basketball program, after it ended a 17-year championship drought last season.
Both teams have qualified for, and now move on to, the CCAA National Championship Tournament from March 15 to 17 at Collge Montmorency in Laval, Que.

| Douglas Royals win PacWest Championship 2018 - Mar 14, 2018

For the first time in 10 years the Douglas Royals are PACWEST champs with a 76-59 victory over the top seeded VIU Mariners.
Defensive was the name of the game for the Royals holding the high flying Mariners offence to 32% from the field and 12% from behind the arch.
Offensively the Royals shot 43% and were led by tournament MVP Grant Campbell (183-PG). He scored 24 points, collected four rebounds, had five assists and four steals. He was also named the player of the game. Reese Morris (F) was another huge factor playing the majority of the game with three fouls he dropped in 17 points and tallied eight rebounds. Noah Derappard-Yuswack (193-F) had 11 rebounds.
The Royals were also outstanding from behind the arch shooting 34% led by Ethan McKean (188-G)'s three and Paul Getz (196-F) and Campbell each drained a pair.
Only two players managed to score for the Mariners in the entire second half. Usama Zaid (193-F) was named player of the game with 23 points and seven rebounds while Bryson Cox (190-G) gathered 12 points. Jerod Dorby (201-F) did all his scoring in the first half and knocked down 13 points.
