Mayas-USA led by as many as 21 mid-way through the second quarter, before Ravia began a methodical comeback, finally taking its first lead late in the third quarter at 75-73.

After averaging 29 ppg during the two-games, Bobby Brown was selected as the Championship Series Most Outstanding Player.

Bobby Brown downs 28 and Dorsey takes control, scoring 14 of Mayas' final 17 points…

Lilburn, Georgia - While many were watching a defensive, rather boring NBA game Thursday evening, game one of the WBA Championship Series was an exciting old fashioned ‘barn-burner' inside Berkmar High School. Mayas led for all but the opening three minutes, but Ravia battled back from 10-12 down on three occasions to put themselves in contention to win the opening game of the best-of-three title series. MaJic Dorsey (6'1''-G-81), slowed by a tweeked hamstring most of the night, woke up late, dazzling the crowd while scoring 14 in the final 5:21 of the game.

Rodney Kirtz's jumper gave Ravia an early 4-2 lead a minute and a half in, but Bobby Brown (6'6''-F-79, college: Kennesaw St.) led a 10-2 Mayas run, to take a 12-4 advantage at the 7:26 mark of the opening period. Brown tallied six in the run. Mayas would build a nine-point cushion in the first quarter, before Ravia, as it did all night long, would fight back to cut it to one, at 28-27 on a 3pt bomb by Robert Cox (6'5''-G/F-83). In the Rebel return, Golden Ingle (5'11''-G-81) would spurt for nine points. Edmund Saunders (6'8''-F/C-78) got a put-back with three seconds left to end the quarter, giving Mayas a 30-37 lead after one stanza. Brown finished with 10 in the quarter for Mayas.

In the second, Mayas quickly pushed out to a 36-29 spread, as their size began to take effect, with Reo Logan, Jeff Daisley and Saunders each getting touches and buckets in the paint on successive trips to open the period. Mayas later went up by 12, after DeShawn Anderson rebounded a David Monds (6'8''-F-83) miss, dribbled the length of the floor and converted the transition basket. Ravia trailed 45-33 with 7:13 left in the half. The teams would trade baskets over the next few minutes, as Dorsey got two short jumpers, followed by another lay-in by Anderson. Monds and Cox countered with deuces, and Joe Hamilton got dropped a shot, but Mayas still led by a dozen with 4:35 showing in the 2nd quarter. The Rebels stepped up their defense, forcing misses by Dorsey and Derrick Stevens. Ravia's defensive stance would spark another march back, as Cox and Ingle both answered with threes to pace a 12-4 stretch to close the half. Brown managed a runner and Saunders got two free throws for Mayas, but Ravia's aggressiveness award them with several trips to the line as well. Brock and Gustavo Atanacio both contributed freethrows in the final two minutes of the half, to help Ravia go into the break only down 55-51.

Brown opened the quarter with a lay-in, to put Mayas up six. Ravia would cut it to 60-59 after Monds rebounded his own miss and converted. Mayas began to open up, as Saunders grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, followed up by two straight transition baskets by Anderson off of Ravia turnovers. Chris Jackson got a lay-in for Ravia, but Dorsey answered with a trey putting Mayas up 77-68 with 5:30 left in the 3rd. Hamilton would muster a dunk for Ravia, but Mayas front court again reared its ugly head with Brown, Sanders and Logan all dropping caromes inside. Ravia again found themselves down by a dirty dozen at 85-73. Never to die, the Rebels would force consecutive turnovers, then a defensive stance, then execute an 8-0 run over the next 60 seconds. Monds got the run started with a shot in the center, Jackson cut in the lane and made a nifty lay-in, then Hamilton got a double-clutch slam, and Ingle got fouled and made two freethrows. Ravia trimmed the score to 85-81, before Brown finally stopped the Mayas bleeding with a bank shot in the lane to end the quarter.

Taking a very uncomfortable 87-81 lead into the final period, Mayas looked to be losing steam. Ravia had appeared to collapse towards the end of the 3rd quarter, but somehow fought back yet again to make it interesting. Ravia would not go away in fourth either, Cox opened with a bucket. Brown made another two for Mayas, but Hamilton cut it back to four, at 89-85, after making a turnaround bank shot from the right side. Two minutes into the 4th, Ingle converted two shots at the line to trim Mayas' lead to 91-89. But, Mayas would outscore Ravia 8-2 over the next three minutes, off of six combined points from Brown and Saunders. Mayas led 99-91 with 8:02 remaining. Ravia seemed to be buckling. But quickly, Doug Underwood nailed a three and a Daisley miss, Jackson converted to bring it back to 99-96. Kirtz capped a 9-2 comeback run by Ravia to cut it to 101-100 with 6:05 left on the clock. At this point, somebody must have knocked Dorsey on the head, because he proceeded to score six straight, to just begin his “take-over” tactics. He nailed a short jumper in the lane, off a huge screen by Saunders, then a lay-in after a Kirtz turnover, followed by a runner in the lane, to push Mayas back up by seven at 4:05. He wasn't done. After trading freethrows, Dorsey drove the right side of the lane and lofted a high runner, while getting fouled. The ball slipped through the nets. He made the foul shot, giving Mayas another double-digit lead. Followed by a Jackson miss and make at the charity stripe, Anderson grabbed the offensive board and connected, putting Mayas up 113-102. But, Cox answered with a tri-fecta for the Rebels. Then after two misses by Logan at the line, Monds' muscled up for a two, bringing Ravia back to within 113-107 with 1:31 left. Ravia was still not going down with out a fight. On the ensuing possession, Dorsey would again drive the lane and while drawing the foul, softly drop the runner. The shot put Mayas up by seven with only :55 ticks showing. This may have been the dagger in Ravia's sides, as turned the ball back over immediately. Dorsey would twist the dagger by sinking the transition basket off the turnover, while again being fouled on the play. He was good on the foul shot attempt with :40 seconds remaining, capping off a remarkable stretch of 14 points over the final 5:21 of the game.

Cox led Ravia with 18 points on the evening, followed by Monds and Ingle with 16 each. Kirtz got 14 points and eight rebounds, while Hamilton and Jackson both tallied 12 off the bench. Hamilton also had eight rebounds and three blocks. Brock was held to only eight on the night. Monds also grabbed eight rebounds and Ingle led Ravia with five assists. Ronald Chinchilla and Atanacio rounded out the scoring with two and one, respectively

For Mayas-USA, Brown paced all scorers with 28 points and also had eight rebounds and two steals. Dorsey finished with 27 points, nine assists, and three steals, while Saunders pounded in 21 points and ruled the glass with 13 rebounds. Logan scored 12 and DeShawn Anderson had 11 points on 5 of 5 shooting from the floor. Zach Anderson and Kareem Grant each posted six and Daisley and Hartley scored 4 and 3, respectively.

With Mayas leading the best-of-three series 1-0, game two is set to tip off at 7:30pm tonight at Berkmar High School at 405 Pleasant Hill Rd Lilburn, Georgia. Game three, if necessary, will be Sunday at 4:30pm.

Ravia Rebels will host Mayas-USA in WBA Championship Series...

Atlanta, Georgia - Minor league basketball through out the country has been in a quagmire the past year. The World Basketball Association (WBA) has suffered through its share of difficulties this season. Despite enduring great trials this spring, along with having to shorten the regular season, the WBA will move ahead with plans to crown a 2007 Champion.

After being named to their respective Conference Titles, Mayas USA and the Gwinnett Ravia Rebels will battle it out in a best of three Championship Series for the WBA Crown. Mayas will represent the Western Conference, while Ravia is the Eastern representative.

Mayas-USA captured the Western Conference Title, finishing the shortened season with a 10-1 overall record. Led by Head Coach Lionel Garrett, who was recently named the 2007 WBA Coach of the Year, Mayas has a talented core of WBA veterans, including two-time WBA MVP Daryl Dorsey (6'1''-G-81, college: S.Indiana), Edmund Saunders (6'8''-F/C-78, college: Connecticut), and Bobby Brown (6'6''-F-79, college: Kennesaw St.). Garrett, Dorsey and Saunders teamed to bring the Rome Gladiators its first WBA Crown in 2005. Saunders, who owns a NCAA Title ring from his days at Uconn, was also a member of Rome's 2006 WBA Title. Brown, who was awarded his third consecutive Defensive Player of the Year award, been a WBA All-league selection the past three years. Garrett, who played for the Harlem Globetrotters after being drafted to the NBA in 1979, was recently named to the Southern University Sports Hall of Fame. Mayas also boasts the proverbial “Noah's Arc” of roster support, with two viable big men in Reo Logan (6'11''-C-81, college: Georgia St.) and Jeff Daisley (7'2''-C-83), two athletic wings in Brandon Hartley and Kareem Grant (6'6''-F/G-82, college: Tennessee St.), and long range shooters in Brandon Heredia (5'11''-G-85, college: Lon Morris JC) and Edgar Soto (6'4''-F/G-77). The ownership group of the Flota family, with Carlos serving as the principal field marshal, has provided the Mayas USA club with a supreme level of stability that permeates the recipe for success. Upon completion of the WBA Championship Series, Mayas will return to Mexico for preparations for the upcoming LNBP season.

The Gwinnett Ravia-Rebels, have been the surprise of the WBA season. Joining the WBA, just days before opening night, Ravia has been immediately a competitive force. Under the ownership of Mary Martinez and Jesse Torres, the Rebels quickly put together an exciting, high-octane team that could put points on the board, while also playing hard-nosed basketball. The Rebels finished the abbreviated WBA season with a 6-4 overall record, with all four losses coming by narrow margins, including two of those by virtue of overtime. Two of their close losses also were against Mayas-USA. WBA Rookie of the Year and first team All-League selection, Evan Brock (6'9''-F-84, college: Alabama) has led the way for the Rebels, while introducing his fresh ‘inside-outside' style of play to the league. Joe Hamilton (6'6''-F-79, college: Virginia Tech) high-flying act has perfectly complimented the outside shooting triage of Rodney Kirtz (6'3''-G-79, college: Mercer), Wayne Arnold and rookie PG Golden Ingle (5'11''-G-81, college: Kennesaw St.). Chris Jackson (6'2''-G-82, college: So.Polytechnic St.) and David Monds (6'8''-F-83, college: Oklahoma St.), who joined the team a few games in, has also infused the ability for the team to have multiple post up options. Jackson, from a guard position, can muscle smaller defenders with his strong physique and shoot from the perimeter, and Monds has given Ravia another option in the post with his ability to maneuver around the paint. Utility player, Robert Cox (-G/F-83, college: So.Polytechnic St.) has provided a great mix of defense, athleticism and scoring ability for Ravia, while Adrien Borders (6'0''-G-83, college: Wofford) has also been very solid at the guard position both offensively and defensively. Cox and Borders were both named to the WBA All-defensive team for this season.

Mayas-USA took the two regular season games from Ravia but not in easy fashion. Back on May 18, Mayas had to battle back from a 26-point deficit to narrowly defeat the Rebels 118-115 at Berkmar. Dorsey downed 25 fourth quarter points and Brown had 18 in the second half, to help kick-start their team into a stirring comeback win. A week later in Longview, Ravia put Mayas to the test again, with Mayas pulling out a 118-111 victory. In their only other meeting, Ravia actually defeated Mayas in a friendly match, so the Rebels know what it takes to compete.

So, the stage is set for an interesting conclusion to what has been a trying season for the WBA community. Never in the WBA's four-year existence has the league opted for a series type of format for the Finals. Clearly, the two most deserving teams are pitted against one another for the rights to claim what will surely be considered a “bitter-sweet“end. Regardless of the hardships, you can bet the level of play which will be displayed this week will not be diluted in any shape, form or fashion. The players for both teams will be going as hard as they can. Mayas-USA will add to the excitement and opportunity for exposure by having the Series televised for viewing all across the Yucatan and Mexico. Players will also have the ability to be exposed to LNBP teams through out Mexico, which is the league that Mayas is also a member of during the traditional winter basketball season.

The series will begin on Thursday night with the two evenly matched teams tipping off at 7:30pm. The Title series will continue on Friday at 7:30pm, followed by game three on Sunday beginning at 4:30pm (if necessary). The series will be held at Berkmar High School 405 Pleasant Hill Rd. in Lilburn (GA).

Wilson defeats Rome, Atlanta bests Floyd County - May. 21, 2007
Both Rome and Floyd county got swept away in Eastern Conference double-header action Saturday in Rome. In the first game of the double-header, the Rome Gladiators faced off against the Wilson NC Hardhats. It was a very even match with multiple lead changes. With Strong inside play from Toby Smith in limited action, the Hardhats pulled away late to take a 111-105 victory. Leading the Wilson team was Tereco Smothers with 28 pts and 7 rebs. Toby Smith was a huge impact late scoring 16 of his 22 pts in the 4th period and grabbing a total of 13 rebs. The Gladiators continue to improve with guard Anthony Slater (5'9''-G-79, agency: Global Sports Plaza, college: Florida Atlantic) dishing out 13 assists along with 5 steals 7 rebounds and 11 pts. Guard Kareem Hodge (6'1''-G-80, college: Auburn-Montgomery) added some scoring punch with 18 pts and 6 assists. Rome was led by power forward Jameer Hendrix who lead all scorers with 36 pts and grabbed 16 rebounds. Bryant Tallie was his usual consistant self puring in 25 pts and 9 rebounds. The Gladiators get back into action this weekend with contests at home against Atlanta and Wilson.

In the second game of the double header the Floyd County Rage lost another close scoring battle to the Atlanta hardhats. The Hardhats jumped out early with Jonathon Kelly and Kay Katron slashing and cutting in the mid post. The Rage setlled in and notted the score at 27 at the end of the first period. With Dean and Hollingsworth creating a steady pace, The Rage took at 64-60 lead into the half. The second half was a perimeter shoot out with Dean and Hollingsworth performing well for the Rage and Coco Cofield (6'1''-G-81, college: N.Dakota St.) dominationg for the Atlanta Squad. Cofield was amazing netting 66 points from strong crossover moves and powerful drives and amazing off balanced 3-pointers. he single handedily paved the way for the Hardhats second win of the season. Coach Perkins for the Rage, when asked about the performance said, " We have big time scorers in Mike Dean (6'2''-G-82, college: center Tenn.St.) and Karl Hollingsworth (6'5''-F/G-82) who togetrher average almost 80 pts per game, so It didn't look like he was doing that well, I think the difference is that when he drove we didn't help well in the interior, when our guys drove they had to contend with 2 or 3 more bodies to finish. we just gave up too many clean lay-ups." The big 3 for Floyd County continued their productive ways with Mike Dean leading the group with 51 pts 8 rebounds and 7 assists, all in spectacular form, Hollingsworth had 40 pts 8 rebound and 9 assists before fouling out late in the contest and Lateece Williams netted 19 pts 15 rebounds 8 assists and 2 blocks in a big time scoring affair that ended in the Rage's second lost of the season 144-138. The Rage is set to travel our west to meet the powerful western team this weekend.

Dorsey downs 25 points in final period to propel Mayas...

Lilburn, GA (May 18, 2007) - For the better part of three quarters, a hot-shooting Rodney Kirtz (6'3''-G) and Golden Ingle (5'11''-G-81) helped Ravia roll over a road-weary, lackluster Mayas-USA squad. But, a hobbled Bobby Brown (6'6''-F-79), with his shear heart and desire, almost forced his teammates to wake up after trailing by as many as 26 points. MaJic Dorsey (6'1''-G-81) fed off Brown's hustle and took over the game, scoring 25 fourth-quarter points to lead Mayas to a 118-115 come from behind win at Berkmar High School on Friday night.

Ravia jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game, as Mayas struggled to find good looks at the basket. Golden Ingle and Wayne Arnold each knocked down treys and David Monds scored several buckets in the paint to help Ravia build a 31-20 lead after one quarter.

Monds continued his hot hand in the second period and Rodney Kirtz got heated up with consecutive 3-pointers from the right wing. Meanwhile, Mayas, still struggling to find a groove, repeatedly launched off-balanced, forced shots. Mid-way through the period, Dorsey who scored 48 points in the Mayas win over Floyd the night before, had only mustered three points against the aggressive Rebel defense. Ravia pushed its lead out to 50-24 at one point, as Mayas looked completely out of sorts and fatigued.

Then, Dorsey drove the lane for a couple of buckets and center Jeff Daisley (7'2''-C-83) dropped a baby hook in the lane, followed by a offensive rebound and put back, to breath life into Mayas. Mayas' run trimmed the Ravia lead down to 16. But, again... Ravia got big buckets from Monds and Doug Underwood to re-build their spread to 22. The Rebels took a comfortable 62-42 lead into the break.

Early in the third stanza the two teams traded baskets, with Ravia maintaining its cushion. Ravia's offensive production seemed to be coming easier with precision ball-movement, even once whipping the ball as many as five times before finding a wide-open Kirtz at the top of the key for a clean three-pointer. Mayas, was beginning to battle though. Brandon Hartley got a lay in off of a Brown steal, then Reo Logan grabbed a loose ball under the basket after a transition-miss and converted. Brown triggered another turnover, and received a pass on the run from Dorsey, connected and drew a foul. He hit the old-fashioned three-point-play, then subsequently executed the same on the next possession. Brown tallied 12 consecutive Mayas points, to ignite his teammates, who had finally decided to get their juices flowing. Ravia was not simply giving in though, with Mayas streaking, Ronald Chinchilla got free under the basket and dropped a shot. Ravia still held a double-digit lead. But, Mayas had turned what could've been a rout, into a game with comeback potential. Dorsey kept that hope alive by closing the quarter with a couple of three-pointers. The Rebels, though on their heels, still led 87-74 going into the final 12-minutes.

Dorsey drove the lane on consecutive trips, hitting a floater, then a runner off the glass on the right side and Mayas was with in single-digits for the first time since early in the game. On the ensuing defensive stand, Ravia coughed up the ball as Brown instigated another steal. Brown turned to make the pass ahead and went to the ground, clutching his knee. The fear of further damage to his sore knee turned out to be a severe cramp. He was forced to leave the game, which seemingly damaged Mayas hopes of completing a comeback. But, Dorsey proceeded to show why he is called "MaJic." The shots that had been errant the previous two and half quarters, began to fall with pin-point precision. Golden Ingle desparately tried to quell the momentum change, hitting two 28-foot tri-fectas, while also providing hard-nosed defense head-to-head on Dorsey. With Ravia's lead down to 94-91, Dorsey hit a trey, then attacked the lane for another basket. Ravia's offense went stagnant, as Mayas' trapping defense forced quick shots. After drawing a foul, Dorsey hit two freethrows to finally knot the score at 96-all. Then, after another Ravia mis-cue, Dorsey fed Hartley on the right side in transition, to give Mayas its first lead of the game with 3:58 remaining.

Mayas would go up 101-96, before Ravia's Joe Hamilton answered with a two-handed slam, cutting it down to three. Dorsey would connect again later with a fadeaway shot on the left baseline, putting Mayas up 108-103. With just under a minute left and after sitting most of the fourth quarter, Kirtz re-entered with his Rebles trailing 116-112. After forcing a Mayas miss, Ravia worked the ball to an open Kirtz, who was errant on a three-point attempt with 13 seconds left on the clock. Forced to foul, Ravia put Dorsey on the freethrow line. Dorsey hit both pushing the score to 118-112. Quickly inbounding, Ravia got the ball to Kirtz, who nailed a three with 5 seconds remaining, cutting it to three. But, Mayas would hold on to the ball as time expired.

Ravia owner Mary Martinez said, "we had this one, but just gave it away. We stopped doing what we did to get the lead, we began taking bad shots and not playing together in the end."

Kirtz paced the Ravia offense with 21 points, while also collecting four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Brock finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, four assist and three steals, while Monds contributed 13 points, five rebounds. Ingle finished with 12 points on four-of-four shooting from beyond the arc and also had four assists and two steals. Hamilton and Arnold each had 11 points, as Cox got 10 points. Underwood finished with seven, Chris Jackson four and Chinchilla two to round out the scoring for Ravia. The Rebels slipped to 2-3 on the season.

Lionel Garrett, head coach for Mayas-USA pointed out that his guys were leg-weary and took a while to get going. "We were lackluster and finally decided to get going. I was confident that we would make a run for it, even when we got down by 26. I was happy with the effort, especially with back-to-back games on the road." He went on to add, "everyone thought the teams in the Eastern Conference were not strong, but we squeezed out close wins both times and some people better open their eyes about the level of competition."

Dorsey, drained 25 fourth quarter points to lead all scorers with 39. He also dished out eight assists, and had two steals. Bobby Brown hustled his way to 26 points, eight rebounds (four offensive), and four steals. Jeff Daisley finished with 14 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks, while Deshawn Anderson (6'3''-G-81) had 13, Reo Logan 10, Hartley six, Edgar Soto five, BJ Puckett four, Brandon Heredia three and Derrick Stevens two. Mayas-USA Texas upped its record to 5-1 on the year and currently is alone atop the WBA standings.

Notes: Mayas-USA Texas has released BJ Puckett, effective May 18, for Conduct Detrimental to Team. Mayas has signed Edmund Saunders, who is scheduled to join the club this week in preparations for their next scheduled game. Saunders is a veteran of the WBA, as he helped the Rome Gladiators to consecutive Championships in 2005 and 2006.

Ravia pushes by Hardhats, 110-99, to even record 2-2...

Lilburn, GA (May 17, 2007) - A strong first quarter set the tone for Ravia in an impressive 110-99 win over the Wilson Hardhats in a WBA Eastern Conference regular season match-up on Thursday night at Berkmar High School.

Wayne Arnold (6'4''-G-84) (6'4''-G-84) downed four three-pointers to kick-start the offense, as the Rebels jumped out to a 31-18 lead after one stanza. Robert Cox also had eight points in the early-going. Leroy Davis tried to keep Wilson close with six points.

Wilson began to level out a bit, as Toby Smith (6'10''-C-85) battled for several buckets, clipping into Ravia's lead. The Hardhats were able to trim their deficit to 39-34, before Ravia re-generated, going on a 21-9 stretch to to take a 61-43 spread into the half. Arnold drilled two more treys and Rodney Kirtz (6'3''-G) got six points in the run.

Toby Smith and newly acquired Coco Cofield (6'1''-G-81) pumped some life into wilson in the third period, as the duo combined for 19 points. Though Ravia's offensive production stalled a bit, Adrien Borders (6'0''-G-83) and Evan Brock (6'9''-F-84) managed to score seven and six, respectively, to prohibit a collapse for the Rebels. After three, Ravia held an 81-69 advantage.

The Hardhats were able to cut the lead under double-digits several times in the final period behind big buckets by Cofield and Emanual Jackson, but Ravia was not to buckle on this night. Arnold sank his seventh 3-pointer of the evening, as David Monds (6'8''-F-83) of Oklahoma State University and Brock each contributed three buckets down the stretch to keep Wilson's rally hopes slim. The Hardhats managed to win the quarter 30-29, but could not muster the comeback.

Smith paced Wilson with 29 points, while Cofield debuted with 21. Emanuel Jackson (6'8''-F/C)  hit 16, while Davis, after a strong start, fizzled to finish with nine. Tracy Hector also had seven for the Hardhats.

For Ravia, who moved to 2-2, Arnold scored 27 points, on seven of eight shooting from beyond the arc. Brock finished with 21, Cox 20, and David Monds 13. Kirtz and Adrien Borders both reached double-figures with 10. Golden Ingle (5'11''-G-81) got eight and Doug Underwood two. Ravia played with out Joe Hamilton, who sat out nursing a twinged hamstring.

Ravia will return to action on Friday as they host the visiting Maya-USA squad, who is currently 4-1, coming off a tough 138-135 win over Floyd County. Tip off is set for 7:30pm at Berkmar High School in Lilburn, Georgia.

MaJic Dorsey explodes for 48 points in Mayas win...

Rome, GA - Majic Dorsey and Mike Dean battled toe-to-toe last night in a high-scoring WBA matchup between Mayas-USA and the Floyd County Rage in Rome last night. Mayas pulled out a close 138-135 victory over the Rage. Dorsey dazzled the crowd with 48 points, including, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals, while Dean put up 34 points.

Mayas led most of the way, and had a 13-point cushion at the half. But, the lead was never comfortable for Mayas Head Coach Lionel Garrett. Garrett said, “we had a double-digit lead at halftime, but it didn't feel like it, because the Rage took the momentum into the locker room at the break and came back out with it going into the third quarter.”

With Dean, the Rage made a push to climb back in the game. Many of the point for the Rage came at the freethrow line by repeatedly drawing fouls. Mayas fell behind mid way through the final stanza, but Dorsey regenerated his offense and Reo Logan came up with some big buckets. Mayas re-captured the lead and were able to hang on down the stretch.

Garrett went on to add, “Floyd County is a surprisingly good squad, who is going to give teams a tough time. Dean is so good and creates so many match up problems with his offensive skills. And, Latece Williams played as good as I've ever seen him play. We were lucky to get out of there with a win. It was a great game and Sean Perkins bent over double to accommodate us. “

To support Dorsey's offensive explosion, Logan finished with 26 points and eight rebounds and Brandon Hartley had 19 points. Bobby Brown, who is slowly working back from a sore knee, collected 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while Deshawn Anderson had nine points, eight rebounds and BJ Puckett eight points.

Mayas played with out third-leading scorer Kareem Grant, who is away due to a death in his family.

Mayas-USA, who moved to 4-1 on the season, is back in action Friday night at Gwinnett Ravia. Floyd County slips to 1-1 in the early going of the season. Tip off is set for 7:30pm at Berkmar High School in Gwinnett County.

Mayas give Tycoons first loss, 109-105 in Longview - May. 14, 2007
Longview, TX - Mayas-USA exacted revenge on their cross-state rival Texas Tycoons on Sunday, defeating the Tycoons 109-105. The Tycoons had defeated the Mayas 147-133 two nights earlier in Dallas but this time the Mayas got even. Behind 31 points from Daryl Dorsey (6'1''-G-81, agency: Edge Sports, college: S.Indiana) and a big game of 17 points and 17 rebounds from Reo Logan (6'11''-C-81, college: Georgia St.), the Mayas made the plays down the stretch to pull out a tough home win. Texas was missing starting Center Aristide Sawadogo (7'1''-C-81, college: Clayton St.) and starting Power Forward Marcus Sloan (6'9''-F-82, agency: Worldwide Hoops, college: TCU) and it showed as the Mayas game plan was a steady diet of feeding the ball down to their bigs and outrebounding the Tycoons by 13 on the night. Sawadogo was in Georgia this past weekend participating in graduation ceremonies at Clayton State University, where Sawadogo received his degree in accounting. Sloan had emergency family business to attend to and could not be present for the game either and that left the Tycoons a little thin across the front line.

Scoring for the Mayas were the aforementioned Dorsey with 31, Kareem Grant (6'6''-F/G-82, college: Tennessee St.) had 23, Logan 17 points and 17 rebounds, Brandon Hartley (6'4''-G-81, agency: ProSportsCareers, college: St.Martin's) 14, and Deshawn Anderson (6'3''-G-81, agency: Pro Management Agency, college: Emporia St.) 11. For the Tycoons Chris Davis (6'5''-G-80, college: N.Texas) led the team once again, this time with 23 points on 9-14 shooting. Tyrone Rayson (6'6''-F-80, college: East Central) had 21 points and 14 rebounds, Mario Kinsey (6'2''-G-82, college: Texas Coll.) had 18 points and 10 assists, Benny West (6'3''-G-82, agency: ProSportsCareers, college: Howard Payne) had 12 points and forced Dorsey into 11 of 30 shooting from the field with his excellent defensive play, Josh Gonner (6'2''-G-82, college: S.Carolina) finished with 10.

The Mayas and Tycoons are now both 3-1 on the young season having split their games with one another, each protecting their home court. The teams are scheduled to play eachother 4 more times this season, two each in Dallas and Longview. Final score Mayas-USA 109, Texas Tycoons 105.   Toby Smith erupts for Triple double of 50/10/10 - May. 14, 2007
Gwinnett Co., GA - In a fantastic game played out at Buchanan Technical in Gwinnett County, The Gwinnett Ravia-Rebels fell to the Atlanta Hardhats 136-133 in double overtime. Leading scorer for the Hardhats was Toby Smith (6'10''-C-85, college: Connors State, Okl.) with 50 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assist. It was a monster performance for Smith, who has been on a tear getting 36 at the Mayas, 37 at the Tycoons, and now his 50 at Gwinnett gives Smith a points per game average after 3 games of 41ppg to lead the WBA.

Other contributors to the winning effort for the Hardhats were Johnathan Burris (6'6''-F-82, college: Bethune-Cookman) with 15points and 10 rebounds, Leroy Davis (6'5''-F-81, agency: ProSportsCareers, college: Georgia St.) 16 points and 11 assists, Lonnie Jackson (6'7''-G/F) 16points to go with 11 rebounds, Kevin Wilkinson (6'7''-G/F-83) had 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 steals. Scoring for Gwinnett was Joe Hamilton (6'6''-F-79, college: Virginia Tech) with 36, chris jackson 30, Evan Brock (6'9''-F-84) 26, Robert Cox (G/F) 21.

Toby Smith is proving to be a match-up problem for teams according to Coach Ashmon "Toby just gets it done. He's so long and active that teams usually need to defend him with a 5 but with his quickness and ability to face up and knock down shots from the perimeter the defense is having a problem with him. He just keeps getting better, I think he's someone teams at the next level need to look at."

Final score in a great contest in Gwinnett had the Atlanta Hardhats eclipsing the Ravia-Rebels in double overtime 136-133. You can get more information on the WBA at www.wbaball.net

Hardhats defeat Gladiators 119-102, healing process in Rome - May. 13, 2007
Rome, GA - The Atlanta Hardhats (1-2) get their first win of the season, defeat Rome Gladiators (0-1) 119-102. In WBA action on Saturday, the Rome Gladiators set out to defend their Championship and started the season on a rough note. The Gladiators have had to face some uncertainty this off-season as an ownership group that had acquired the historically successful franchise had severe legal issues that would affect every aspect of running a professional team. The league had to step in and reaquire the ownership interest and is currently working with another ownership group in Rome on the sale of the 2-time champions. The Glads have some work to do to catch up to the rest of the league and started the season without their full expected line-up in place.

The Gladiators couldn't get going on the offensive end of the court and had trouble stopping the Hardhats as Atlanta built a 17 point lead, that they never relinquished. There were some sparks for the Glads though with forward Jemere Hendrix (6'8''-F-83, college: Tennessee) pouring in 29 pts and Josh Talley (6'2''-G-84) adding 23. In a disappointing season opening loss, the Glads had some keys to look forward to. In addition to Hendrix and Talley, point guard Anthony Slater (5'9''-G-79, agency: Global Sports Plaza, college: Florida Atlantic) had a double-double with 12 pts, 15 assists & 3 steals.

The Hardhats were lead by Jonathan Kelly (6'6''-G-84, college: Florida A&M) who led all scorers with 37, followed by Terico Smothers (6'4''-G) with 27.

Rome Gladiators Head Coach Gerald Oliver when asked about the set back said "First things first, we have people surrounding this organization that want to do things the right way. Perk (referring to Floyd County Head Coach Sean Perkins) and I have met with the community and the people here in Rome love the Gladiators. The owner of the Hardhats franchise has stepped in to help us right this ship and the league is currently talking to potential long term ownership groups in Rome and their big things on the horizon for this team. We expect to have Mike Harper and Ike McCowem with us next week and I want to remind people Rome was not built in a day. This season is 20 games and then the playoffs, we'll be where we need to be come winning time and the people of Rome will have a team and an organization that they can support."

Director of Basketball Operations Chris Terrell said "We want the right type of ownership group and we would like for that group to be representative of the proud city of Rome. Romans have a special place in their hearts for the Gladiators and only someone that can carry on that legacy in a dignified way will control the interests of the team. We want to thank Jerry Montgomery for taking on this task until we have another ownership group in place."

On the court, the players didn't give up, a little undersized and needing of reinforcements but have some key aspects in place of a winning team. Add that to the coaches and management now in place their should be big things happening in Rome for time to come. An interesting cross town rival is building with neighboring Floyd County Rage and things will be looking up in Rome. Final score Atlanta 119 Rome 102.

The Mayas USA Texas used a 37-point fourth quarter and scored 12 points off turnovers late in the final quarter to defeat the Texas Tycoons, 109-105, in a World Basketball Association game at Solheim Arena.

The Mayas entered the fourth quarter down by one, but got a big lift from Daryl Dorsey late in the game as he nailed two crucial three-pointers. Dorsey finished the game with 31 points , after scoring only nine points in the first half due to early foul trouble. Dorsey also added five assists.

"I just come out here to try and have some fun, hope to stay in shape for NBA summer league, I got a lot of teams looking at me right now," said "Majic" Dorsey. "I just basically was trying to have fun and bring some experience to the team."

The Mayas held the biggest lead of the game when they were up by 10 midway through the fourth quarter, but the Tycoons stormed back in a matter of seconds and were within two points, 102-100, with a minute and a half remaining. Tycoon point guard, Mario Kinsey, forced a pass down low that was stolen by Maya forward Reo Logan with 40 seconds left to play. Logan got possession of the ball and handed it off to Dorsey, who then dribbled down court and nailed a 3-pointer with no hesitation, making it 107-102 with 30 seconds remaining. Another costly turnover for the Tycoons shut the door for a win when Jerome Rogers lost the ball out of bounds with 16 seconds remaining. The Mayas eventually put the game out of reach by making three free throws in the final 15 seconds.

"I'm pretty happy tonight. We were able to beat a very good team, the Tycoons are the sixth-ranked minor league basketball team in the country," said Mayas head coach Lionel Garrett . "We kinda proved to ourselves that we're a good team. We came home, we took care of business, we played good team ball and good team defense."

Joining Majic in scoring was Kareem Grant, who poured in 23 points (16 in the second half) and eight rebounds. Logan dominated inside for the Mayas, where he scored 17 points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds to go along with five steals and three assists while playing all 48 minutes. Brandon Hartley added 14 points, including 9-of-11 from the free throw line, and Deshawn Anderson scored 11 points for the Mayas (3-1), who evened the season series at one, after avenging a loss to the Tycoons on May 11.

Leading the Texas Tycoons (3-1) in scoring was Chris Davis with 23 points. Tyrone Rayson added 21 points and 14 rebounds and Kinsey finished with 18 points,10 assists, and six steals. Benny West contributed 12 points and Josh Gonner added 10 points in seven minutes. Former Kilgore College Ranger, Jai Pradia, finished with seven points and seven rebounds, including an impressive put-back dunk early in the first quarter.

The Mayas will face the Rome Gladiators in Georgia on May 17. The next home game will be May 25, when the Mayas host the Wilson Hardhats at Lobo Coliseum.

"I want to stress that WBA basketball is very exciting and we want to invite everybody to come out and enjoy the game," said coach Lionel Garrett . "The people who were here had a good time and its very exciting."

  Floyd County defeats Gwinnett Ravia-Rebels 147-141 - May. 12, 2007
In an Eastern Division opening matchup the Floyd County Rage opened with an impressive comback win against the explosive Gwinnett Ravia-Rebels 147-141. The Rebels got off and running early, scoring 43 points in the first quarter behind the sharp shooting of Wayne Arnold (6'4''-G-84, college: Tennessee St.) and Rodney Kirtz (6'3''-G, college: Mercer). The Rage depended on an attacking style of play from Karl Hollingsworth (6'5''-F/G-82) to stay close through 2 quarters. Floyd County down by 12 in the center of the 3rd looked to explosive guard Mike Dean (6'2''-G-82, college: center Tenn.St.) to lead them back. With a display of long range jumpshots and slashing moves to the paint he led the Rage to an impressive 147-141 season opening win.

When asked about the game Floyd County Rage Head Coach Sean Perkins said "We haven't had the practice time together that we would of liked but our offensive firepower really showed as the game went on. Mike Dean and Karl Hollingsworth really inforced their will in the second half and we were able to pull it out for our first win. Gwinnett has a great team, we got out of their by the skin of our teeth."

Leading the way for the Gwinnett Ravia-Rebels was Evan Brock (6'9''-F-84) with 31 pts, Robert Cox (-G/F) 28, Wayne Arnold 18, and Joe Hamilton (6'6''-F-79, college: Virginia Tech) with 17.   In the Battle of Texas, Tycoons Win, defeat Mayas 146-133 - May. 12, 2007
Dallas, TX - The showdown of the two undefeated teams from the Western division of the World Basketball Association was billed as "The Battle of Texas" and the Texas Tycoons moved to 3-0 on the season handing Mayas-USA (2-1) their first loss by a score of 146-133.

Mayas-USA is the Longview (TX) based expansion franchise in the WBA this season whose team competes in Mexico's LNBP during the fall season. The Tycoons are based in Dallas and also compete in another league, advancing to the Championship game this past season in the ABA. Dallas and their East Texas neighbors of Longview are seperated by less than 100 miles of Interstate and the two teams were nearly inseperable throughout much of the first half on Friday. Texas held a slight edge at 36-35 after one quarter while the Mayas took their turn on top at 75-71 at the half. The game had all the markings of an old west shootout as each team took turns trading baskets, the pace was furious and the Mayas led by an incredible score for three quarters of 113-105.

Tycoons Head Coach Chris Terrell when asked about the game said "We averaged 133 in the ABA and any team (Mayas) with Dorsey at the helm will be able to put up buckets. The pace of the game and the accuracy of the shooting was prolific and I would have to say that if either team decided to back it out and run 24 seconds off the clock that the scoring would of been lower but both teams want to push it and get in the open court so this one was going to come down to who had more left in the tank at the end."

Top performers on the evening had the Mayas "Lil MaJic" Daryl Dorsey (6'1''-G-81, agency: Edge Sports, college: S.Indiana) as the leading scorer with 34. Reo Logan (6'11''-C-81, college: Georgia St.) had 27, Kareem Grant (6'6''-F/G-82, college: Tennessee St.) 15, Bobby Brown (6'6''-F-79, agency: BeSeenHoop.com, college: Kennesaw St.) had 12, and Derrick Stevens (5'11''-G-80, college: Colorado St.) had 10. For the Tycoons, Chris Davis (6'5''-G-80, college: N.Texas) had 28, Jerome Rogers (5'10''-G-81, college: N.Texas) 25, Tyrone Rayson (6'6''-F-80, college: East Central) 20, Brandon Lee (6'3''-G, agency: ProSportsCareers, college: Tarleton St.) 13, Benny West (6'3''-G-82, agency: ProSportsCareers, college: Howard Payne) and Marcus Sloan (6'9''-F-82, agency: Worldwide Hoops, college: TCU) both finishing with 11. Sloan also adding 8 boards on the night and some stingy defense in the fourth quarter when Texas made it's run. Behind a 41 point fourth quarter while holding their opponent to only 20, the Texas Tycoons proved to have more left in the tank on this night.

Final score in a shoot out; Texas Tycoons 146, Mayas-USA 133.

Now the home and home series turns to Longview as the Mayas will have their chance to exact revenge on their cross-state rivals, tip-off is scheduled for 4pm on Sunday afternoon in the rematch.   Tycoons get ahead early and hang on for 113-99 victory over Atlanta Hardhats - May. 6, 2007
Dallas, TX - The Texas Tycoons faced off with the Atlanta Hardhats on Sunday afternoon at the Tommie Allen Town Center in Dallas, Texas and at the half most thought the game had been decided. Texas behind 20 points and 4 assists from Mario Kinsey (6'2''-G-82, college: Texas Coll.) built a double digit lead on Atlanta, leading 34-21 at the break. The Tycoons played 11 players in the first 8 minutes of the game and just kept coming in waves at the visiting Hardhats with a balanced team effort. Tycoons' star Chris Davis (6'5''-G-80, college: N.Texas) had 19 points and 7 rebounds in a game that got out of hand after two quarters, Texas holding a 68-40 advantage.

The second half was all about the heart and determination of the Atlanta Hardhats. A team that had a long road trip from Atlanta to play Mayas-USA in Longview Friday night and then on to Dallas on Sunday wasn't going to give up. Toby Smith (6'10''-C-85, college: Connors State, Okl.) and William Howard put on a show, Smith connecting on 16 of 18 shots from the field en route to a 37 point effort. Smith faced up and knocked down challenged mid-range jumpers and when the defense closed out to quickly he put it on the floor and got to the basket finishing with his left and right. Smith also had 10 rebounds in a game that many thought was over at the half. Howard got to the foul line on a regular basis in the second half going 11 for 13 from the charity stripe on his way to 35 points for the game to help get the game back into striking distance.

Tycoons Head Coach Chris Terrell when asked about the game said "They have some incredible players and I don't want to take anything away from the Hardhats, they didn't give up and kept battling to the final whistle. I am just disapointed that we couldn't keep our focus and our intensity in that third quarter. We talked about it at the half and pro guys don't change their intensity, when you get up on somebody you've got to put your foot down and finish the game, not let up and make it a game again before you start to play."

Texas would hold on for the victory 113-99 with the Hardhats getting no closer than 12 in the second half. Texas had 6 players in double figures with the aforementioned Kinsey's 20 and Davis's 19.   Mayas win home opener, defeat Atlanta 130-106 - May. 5, 2007
Longview, TX - The Mayas USA Texas basketball team opened its World Basketball Association existence with a flourish, defeating the Atlanta Hardhats130-106 Friday night at Lobo Coliseum.

By News-Journal Longview
http://www.news-journal.com/sports/content/sports/stories/05052007___mayas_of_texas.html

Daryl Dorsey (6'1''-G-81, agency: Edge Sports, college: S.Indiana) of Mayas USA Texas looks to shoot during Friday's season-opening game against the Atlanta Hardhats at Lobo Coliseum. Daryl "Majic" Dorsey led five Mayas in double figures with 35 points in the WBA West Division season opener for both teams. "We came out and there was some pressure on us," Dorsey said. "We had some players that were playing their first professional game and we had some Mexican players that had never played here in America. I came out a little slow also."

The Mayas all adjusted rather quickly, though, and began putting up the points. "We trailed for a little bit, but coach (Lionel) Garrett called a timeout, got us together and told us we needed to get out there and play and do what we have to do to win a championship. We did and things turned out OK," Dorsey added. The point guard/shooting guard and a former WBA Most Valuable Player was joined in double figures by Bobby Brown (6'6''-F-79, agency: BeSeenHoop.com, college: Kennesaw St.), Reo Logan (6'11''-C-81, college: Georgia St.), Deshawn Anderson (6'3''-G-81, agency: Pro Management Agency, college: Emporia St.) and Kareem Grant (6'6''-F/G-82, college: Tennessee St.). Brown had 28, Logan 19, Anderson 10 and Grant 16. Anderson and Grant did their damage coming off the bench.

Toby Smith (6'10''-C-85, college: Connors State, Okl.) of the Hardhats, who are based in Atlanta, led all scorers with 36 points. He was joined in double figures by Leroy Davis (6'5''-F-81, agency: ProSportsCareers, college: Georgia St.) (12), William Howard (6'5''-G/F-84, agency: BeSeenHoop.com, college: N.Carolina A&T) (11), Mike Toth (6'3''-G-84, college: Delaware St.) (10) and Johnathan Burris (6'6''-F-82, college: Bethune-Cookman) (10). The visiting Hard Hats opened with a 7-0 run before Logan scored the Mayas USA Texas franchise's first points on two free throws with 10:46 remaining in the first quarter. With a 6-0 run of their own just moments later, the Mayas closed the deficit to three, 11-8.

The Mayas first lead of the game came at 29-28 as Dorsey converted a jump shot as the first quarter ended. The Mayas led by as many as 11 with 8:19 remaining in the second quarter and led by nine, 56-47, at intermission. Majic and the Mayas really got things going, though, in the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 32-18, extending their lead to 23 (88-65) as Brown ended the period with a pair of free throws. The biggest lead of the contest — 31 points — came on a Brandon Hartley basket, giving the Mayas a 128-97 lead with just 1:20 left to play. In the final minute, the Hard Hats put together an 8-0 run, closing to within 22 before Grant hit a basket at the buzzer, giving the Mayas the victory.

"This was a good win for us," Garrett said. "It's always important to get the first one. But even more important is that we really want to invite everyone in Longview and the surrounding area to come out and be a part of this."

The Mayas, who have been based on the Yucatan Peninsuala in Merida, Mexico since 1999, continue their 20-game schedule with their first road game of the season Sunday against the Mississippi Miracles in Cleveland, Miss. The Mayas return home to Lobo Coliseum for a 4 p.m. contest against the Texas Tycoons on May 13 at 4 p.m.

Texas Tycoons open 2007 WBA season with a win, defeating Mississippi 130-111 - May. 5, 2007
Dallas, TX - The Texas Tycoons opened the 2007 WBA season with an impressive win, defeating the visiting Mississippi Miracles 130-111 on Friday. The WBA season opener for both western division teams was a good game with a tie after one quarter at 27 a piece. The 2nd quarter was also very competitive as each team took it's turn making runs at the other but the Tycoons held a small advantage at the half of 58-52 due in most part to the exciting play of Chris Davis (6'5''-G-80, college: N.Texas). Davis led all scorers with 30 points on 11 of 13 shooting from the field, 1 of 2 from 3 point land, to go along with 7 rebounds and 5 assists. The third quarter is where the Tycoons broke the game open, outscoring the Miracles 42-24 en route to a 100-76 score going into the final quarter. Each team traded baskets from there but the damage had already been done and Tycoons head coach Chris Terrell said Davis "CD" was the key for Texas "Teams are really going to have problems with CD all season. At 6'5 225 he creates alot of matchup problems for 2s at this level, he pretty much gets to where he wants. He has the size at the 2 to get to the rim at will and the ups to rise up over people with his shot. He has NBA range and a very deceptively quick first step. Forwards can't stay in front of him and guards are just overmatched. We're hoping that this season can be the launching pad for CD to the next level. Chris Davis is a bonified NBA prospect and we're going to do everything possible for teams to see him this summer."

Final Stats for the game for the Texas Tycoons:

"CD" Chris Davis 30 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists - 84.7% FG (11-13)
Tyrone Rayson (6'6''-F-80, college: East Central) 20 points, 11 rebounds - 75% FG (6-8)
Jerome Rogers (5'10''-G-81, college: N.Texas) 17 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists 83.3% FG (4-6)
Mario Kinsey (6'2''-G-82, college: Texas Coll.) 15 points, 5 assists 66.7% FG (5-6)
Benny West (6'3''-G-82, agency: ProSportsCareers, college: Howard Payne) 15 points 87.5% FG (7-8)
Hank Rivers (6'8''-F-81, agency: 7-Miracles, college: Stephen F. Austin) 12 points, 7 rebounds 83.3% FG (5-6)

Mississippi Miracles:

Wesley Haynes 26 points 38.9% FG (7-18)
Quentin Edwards (6'3''-G-83, college: Missouri Southern) 21 points, 5 assists 75% FG (6-8)
Lonnie Jackson (6'7''-G/F) 17 points, 7 rebounds 41.7% FG (5-12)
Buster Perkins (6'4''-G, college: Virginia Union) 13 points, 4 rebounds 66.7% FG (2-3)
Travis Degreat 12 points, 66.7% FG (6-9)

Final Team Stats:

Texas: 130 points, 48 rebounds, 27 assists, 73.3% FG (44-60)
Mississippi: 111 points, 29 rebounds, 18 assists, 48.6% FG (35-72)

The Tycoons next match-up will be a Sunday afternoon game with the Atlanta Hardhats. The Tycoons will be attempting to go 2-0 on the season while Atlanta (0-1) will be looking for their first win.

Texas Tycoons kick off WBA season with Friday night match up with Mississippi - May. 3, 2007
Dallas, TX - The Texas Tycoons are set to host the Mississippi Miracles on Friday night May 4th at 7pm at Tommie Allen Town Center in Dallas, Texas. The Tycoons are the 6th rated minor league basketball team as ranked by the end of season fall rankings by www.probasketballnews.com NBA beat writer Sam Amico. The Texas Tycoons advanced to last fall's ABA Championship Game and were White Conference and Southern Division Champions. Texas has several of their returning stars for the spring-summer league World Basketball Association (WBA). The WBA has been successful in having 60 former players go on to compete for NBA opportunities via NBA summer leagues, NBA individual workouts, NBA training camp and pre-season games, as well as NBA regular season rosters. Hundreds of former WBA players are now competing successfully in Europe and other overseas leagues around the world.

Of the players donning Texas Tycoons uniforms this season include: Chris Davis (6'5''-G-80, agency: Court Side, college: N.Texas), Brandon Lee (6'3''-G, agency: ProSportsCareers, college: Tarleton St.), Jerome Rogers (5'10''-G-81, college: N.Texas), Hank Rivers (6'8''-F-81, agency: 7-Miracles, college: Stephen F. Austin), Benny West (6'3''-G-82, agency: ProSportsCareers, college: Howard Payne), Jarrett Howell (6'2''-G-84, college: Texas Arlington), Bryce May (6'7''-F-82, college: Mc Neese St.), Mario Kinsey (6'2''-G-82, college: Texas Coll.), Randall Williams (6'8''-C-82, college: Tarleton St.), Jai Pradia (6'6''-F-79, agency: ND Corner Sports, college: Pittsburg St.), Tyrone Rayson (6'6''-F-80, college: East Central), Brian Gilic (7'1''-C-82, college: Santa Monica CC), Jean-Paul Afif (6'9''-F-80, agency: World Sport Agency, college: Loyola Marymount) and J.R. Harrison (6'6''-F-84, college: Rice).

One of the more intriguing players suiting up for the Tycoons will be Clayton State big man Aristide Sawadogo (7'1''-C-81, college: Clayton St.). Sawadogo is a native of the African republic of Burkina Faso and came to the United States to enroll at Clayton State University in Atlanta, Georgia. Sawadogo was also a member of the Junior National Team in Africa and at 7'1 265lbs was All-SEBL 1st Team player and Defensive Player of the Year. Texas Head Coach Chris Terrell when asked about the addition said of Sawadogo "Aristide is an inside force offensively and defensively. He blocks or alters a dozen or more shots a game and is a real intimidating pressence. He grew up playing soccer in his country and took up basketball later in life but he is improving by leaps and bounds (literally and figuratively). I've spoken to several NBA teams about taking a look at him this summer and the hope is that he and several of the players on this year's squad will have some opportunities after the season to show what they can do at the next level."

Huff leaves the Gladiators, Oliver is the new coach  - Apr. 18, 2007
Cabral Huff is no longer the head coach of the Rome Gladiators. According with Huff statements, It seems that he and his entire coaching staff, which was working on a volunteer basis, had resigned “due to the lack of professionalism, and honesty of ownership.” The version of miss Elena Brown, the co-owner of the Rome Gladiators and the Rome Knights, is quite different: she said to local media that Huff and his staff were let go because they “were not getting us where we needed to go.” This difference of positions is a common finding in minor league report, as anyone knows.... However, The ownershio of the Gladiators/Knights named Gerald Oliver as the teams' new coach. The Gladiators are the two-time champs of the WBA, that is now scheduled to open the season in May, after that the 2007 season has been pushed back because of some illness in the league's front office

Main Elementary Welcomes the Rome Gladiators - Mar. 28, 2007
Main Elementary Welcomes the Rome Gladiators
March 2007
Rome, GA

Members of the Rome Gladiators took time out of their schedule to visit the students at Main Elementary School.

“I really enjoyed visiting the kids and spending time with them”, said Asst. Coach Bryant Caldwell. “We taught them basic fundamentals and had a good time doing it.”

As soon as the Gladiators arrived, students cheered and roared as the players received hand slaps from the crowd. Coach Caldwell introduced the players as the students gave them a round of applause.

Immediately, students began volunteering for exercise drills such as stretching and layup drills. The drills quickly became “ooh's” and “aah's” when the layups turned into dunks. Participating students turned their layups into dunks, receiving help from some of the players.

The students continued to stay interactive, participating in a 5-on-5 scrimmage composed of players, students and teachers. Next, students also were in competition with the players to see who could make five shots from behind the arc the fastest.

Coach Caldwell concluded the session with the students by having them participate in line drills with the players. Afterwards, students were able to get autographs from players and Coach Caldwell.

“I look forward to the next appearance,” stated Caldwell. “It's going to be another fun filled, educational day.”

The Rome Gladiators will appear at Model Elementary on April sixth. For more information, visit www.romeknights.com.

Harold Ellis steps away from the Rome Gladiators, plans to include extensive national scouting this spring and summer - Feb. 7, 2007
Harold Ellis steps away from the Rome Gladiators, plans to include extensive national scouting this spring and summer. Ellis, the Minor League Coodinator for the Atlanta Hawks, just recently returned from the CBA All-Star game and continues to scout the D-League and has plans to see the ABA this winter and the WBA and USBL this spring as well as the Portsmouth Invitational, Rocky Mountain Review, and Orlando Summer Pro Leagues en route to a natural progression towards management and front office opportunities.

Ellis when asked about his plans this summer stated "My job is to find the best basketball players in the World for the Atlanta Hawks, players that are most ready to contribute at the highest level. We spend a tremendous amount of time going around the country to scout for those talented players. I've been fortunate to be successful at the minor league level winning the two championships in Rome and this is a natural progression in my career."

Ellis is thankful to the WBA for the opportunity to lead one of their most successful franchises the past few years and will be watching closely for those future talents that accend from the league. As a member of the NBA D-League's Chairman Committee and in continuing in his efforts with the NBA's Basketball Without Borders that takes him around the world, most recently being a part of the league's program held in Africa this past summer, Ellis and the Atlanta Hawks are working hard to find those players best ready to contribute in the NBA.   Texas Tycoons announce year round program to include ABA & WBA - Feb. 6, 2007
Dallas, TX - The Texas Tycoons have announced that the team will be playing in the World Basketball Association this season. The current #4 ranked team in the American Basketball Association will be continuing their season after the ABA has concluded on into the WBA's Spring-Summer schedule. The Tycoons have confirmed that they will continue to call Dallas, Texas' Mountain View College as their home venue for both leagues.
The year round program the Tycoons have layed out will feature the competition for two league championships. The ABA champion is crowned in March and the WBA season opens training camps in April so the team sees a smooth transition. At the conclusion of the WBA season is the NBA summer leagues and then the marketing and training begins all over again leading up to next fall for the 2007-2008 ABA season. The Tycoons would like to position themselves as the model for the development of their players and market.
Owner of the Dallas based Texas Tycoons, Charles Key , stated "I am excited about this new opportunity presented by the WBA. I look forward to presenting the professional ball players to the basketball world".
Head Coach and Director of Basketball Operations of the Texas Tycoons is Chris Terrell . Terrell is also the Director of Basketball Operations for the WBA. When asked about the continuation of the season with the WBA, Terrell said "Our goals on the basketball court are simple, compete for and win an ABA then WBA championship. The two rings and developing players for their pursuit of opportunities in the NBA is very important to me and this organization. We think we have some of the best fans in the country. Dallas knows it's sports well and loves winners. This organization is a proven winner and continuing that relationship with our fans as a part of a year round program makes a lot of sense for us on the basketball and business sides."
In addition to the Tycoons, Mayas-USA will be entering the WBA as an expansion team this season in Texas. The successful LNBP franchise in Mexico's top division will develop their star players in their off season. Mayas-USA is currently reviewing an agreement with the University of Texas-Tyler and an announcement regarding their plans for East Texas is expected shortly.
The WBA schedule concludes in the first week of July where the 2007 WBA champion will be crowned. The WBA has been successful in aiding 60 of it's former players on to opportunities with NBA teams via the NBA summer leagues and individual team workouts, four of those players going on to sign NBA contracts and many others doing very well in the D-League or Overseas.
WBA League President Leroy McMath stated "The WBA is committed to reasonable expansion with organizations that can demonstrate their abilites to operate at an extremely high level. Having been approached by several fall season based minor league teams, it was important to the WBA that the Texas Tycoons have a proven track record of being successful in their market as a business entity and on the basketball court. We are very fortunate to welcome team owner Charles Key and General Manager Mike Senters to the WBA family. I know Chris (Terrell) knows what it takes to be successful and he will continue to be a strong part of our management structure with the WBA and in addition, lead his successful team onto the court this spring."
