The Newport News Apprentice School won the National Small College men’s basketball tournament championship for the third time in school history on Wednesday, beating Lyon College of Arkansas 73-68 at Virginia State University in Petersburg. Donovan Means (6'3''-G) led the Builders (25-5) with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists. He was joined in double figures by teammates Avin Hawkins (6'4''-G) (15 points), Adrion Wall (6'3''-G) (15 points) and Kareema Smith (2005) (10 points), while Isaiah Jones (6'9''-F) grabbed 11 rebounds. Frank Toney (6'0''-PG) led Lyon (18-9) with 25 points. The Builders led 33-30 at halftime and never trailed following a 3-pointer by Wall that put them back in front at 51-49 with 10:54 to play. The Builders led by only a point with 6:55 to play, when tournament MVP Means scored six consecutive points — four on a pair of layups and two more at the free-throw line — to give them control at 65-58. “I’m thankful for us to have gotten this because it’s been a 21-year gap since the last one,†Builders coach Evan Kee said, noting that the school’s most recent men’s national title came in 2003. “It’s a huge testament to the season we had. “The key was our defense. We kept their point guard from getting in their half-court offense and then we made some shots.†Courtesy of: pilotonline.com

Crown College Takes the Crown in the 2024 DII Men's Basketball National Championship-Mar 19, 2024
Minneapolis, MN: The Crown College Polars captured their first-ever Division II Men's Basketball National Championship behind a heroic late and-one bucket from Cade Carroll (6'5''-F) against rival and No. 3 North Central University. The National Championship served as the fourth time the two sides have met this season with Crown winning 75-72. After a slow offensive start, Crown would take a 35-29 lead into the half behind a team high 12 points from Carter Behne (6'0''-PG). Crown would keep the lead for all but a few minutes of the second half, as Tyrus Buckner (6'7''-F) had an answer for every North Central run ending the game with a team high 30 points and nine rebounds. It was Cade Carroll that would put the Rams away though with his and-one bucket in the final minute. The No. 1 seeded Polars opened the tournament with a dominant first round 87-69 victory over No. 8 Kansas Christian College. Crown would get out to a 20 point halftime edge and hold the lead throughout behind the offensive performance of Cade Carroll who finished the game with a 31 point, 17 rebound double-double. In the semifinal, Crown overcame a 1-11 start to the game and a halftime deficit to down No. 4 Spurgeon College 86-72. Carroll continued his dominance with a Crown program record 45 points on 16-26 shooting to advance to the championship game.
