Northwest Florida State outlasts South Plains in overtime for NJCAA championship - Mar 22, 2015

Sophomore guard Benji Bell (6'4''-G-93) scored 28 points before fouling out and Northwest Florida State beat South Plains College 83-80 in overtime Saturday night in the championship game of the NJCAA men's basketball tournament. Freshman guard Jarin Hilson, who had just come into the game, made two free throws with 27 seconds left for the game's final points. Texans guard Diamante Langston missed a 3 as time ran out. Sophomore forward Emmanuel Omogbo (6'7''-F) had 21 points and 10 rebounds for South Plains (29-7), which was denied its third NJCAA title in eight years after winning it all in 2008 and 2012. Northwest Florida State (33-2) won its first title. The Raiders lost to the Texans in the 2012 championship game. Omogbo's two free throws gave the Texans a 79-76 lead at the 2:07 mark, but Jalen Jackson (6'6''-G-94)'s three-point play pulled the Raiders even at 79 with 1:37 to go. A Texans turnover and a layup by Jackson gave Northwest Florida State the lead for good at 81-79. With 37 seconds left, Bell fouled out and the Texans had a chance to tie it, but Langston made only one of two free throws. Both teams won their semifinal games in overtime on Friday night. This time, the Raiders missed a contested 4-footer just at the end of regulation and the score tied at 71. South Plains had a favorable factor as Northwest Florida State had four players with four fouls as overtime started. Langston made the first basket of overtime, and the lead subsequently changed hands four times with Andre Spight (6'2''-G) putting South Plains in front 77-76 at 2:18 in overtime. Sophomore forward David Kadiri (6'8''-F-95) had 13 points and 13 rebounds for South Plains. The Texans got 11 points from Spight and nine from freshman forward Marlon Jones (F). Jackson scored 19 points for Northwest Florida State, followed by Brandon Austin (6'6''-F/G-94) with 15 and Keith Charleston (6'7''-G/F-95) with 10.

Richard Bland wins NJCAA Division II National Championship - Mar 22, 2015

Twenty minutes into Saturday's NJCAA Tournament final at Mary Miller Gymnasium, the Richard Bland College men's basketball team saw a 38-21 lead at halftime. But once the second half started, the Statesmen never lost sight of the task at hand and that was to win the NJCAA Championship. Richard Bland (32-4), the No. 3 seed, won its first ever NJCAA title in program history in just its second year of bringing back athletics after defeating John Wood Community College in an 64-53 decision. Sophomore forward Avery Ugba (6'7''-C-94) (Silver Springs, MD) was named the tournaments' Most Outstanding Player, while sophomore forward Tavon Mealy (6'3''-F-95) (Richmond, VA) was named to the All-Tournament Team. Head coach Chuck Moore was named Most Outstanding Coach. Ugba led the Statesmen with 16 points, grabbing 13 boards for his fourth consecutive double-double in the tournament. Mealy followed with 13 points while collecting 10 rebounds and Pedro Berrios (G) (Hopewell, VA) added 12 points. The Statesmen shot 53 percent (16 - 30) from the floor and hit 5 of 12 3-pointers in the first half. More importantly, the Statesmen never trailed the entire game despite RBC giving up its 23-point lead in the second half. Richard Bland outrebounded John Wood 56-45 and held the Blazers to 25 percent (5-20) from beyond the arc in the second half. RBC opened up the game with an 12-1 spurt, and later held 28-10 lead but the Blazers would began to claw at the deficit as the second half got underway, going on an 8-0 run over the last three and a half minutes to get within five points 58-53 after RBC missed its last ten shots from the floor. The Blazers would never get any closer than five points after as Ugba scored a layup to extend the Statesmen lead 60-53. Mealy and Melvin Gregory (6'8''-F-93) (Weems, VA) would sink free-throws with seconds left on the clock to seal the deal. Paxton Smith (6'2''-G) led the Blazers with 15 points.

Richland edges Rock Valley for DIII Men's Basketball championship - Mar 15, 2015

Facing a double-digit deficit in the second half, Richland (Texas) fought back to knock off defending national champion Rock Valley (Ill.) 67-64 Saturday for the 2015 NJCAA Division III men's basketball title. The come-from-behind victory gave the Thunderducks their third national title in program history.

Playing 33 minutes off the bench, sophomore Kierre Moore (F) was unstoppable for Richland. The forward scored a game-high 20 points, going a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Moore added four rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block to the effort.

Three of the Thunderducks starters joined Moore in posting double-figures in scoring. Sophomore guard Brandon Woods (G) totaled 15 points - connecting on 6-of-9 shots from the field - and picked away three steals. Fellow second-guard Trey Hall (G) scored 11 points, adding a team-high five assists and six rebounds. Sophomore center Ishmael Donzo (C) racked up 12 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds.

Richland's victory came in large part to their dominance on the boards. The Thunderducks pulled down 39 rebounds - nine on the offensive end - to Rock Valley's 23. The inside game was also a key to success for Richland as they outscored the Golden Eagles 30-20 in the paint.

Averaging 12.3 points and 7.6 rebounds in three championship games, Moore was named tournament MVP. Hall was recognized as well, receiving all-tournament honors. Hall averaged 14.3 and five rebounds in Loch Sheldrake.

Earning the program's third NJCAA crown, Richland adds another trophy to the shelf which already houses their titles from 1999 and 2009. The Thunderducks capped off the 2014-15 season with a final record of 27-3.

Failing to repeat their championship run of a year ago, Rock Valley dropped to 31-4 for the year.
