Phoenix College claims NJCAA men's basketball title - Mar 23, 2014

Never before had a junior-college basketball team from Arizona won a national championship at any level. The Phoenix College men and Mesa Community College women made sure that was no longer the case Saturday night. Behind the stellar play of an all-freshman backcourt, Phoenix College outlasted Essex County College out of Newark, N.J., 71-67 in the championship game of the NJCAA Division II Tournament on Saturday night. The Mesa women defeated Highland (Kan.) Community College 82-72 in Overland Park, Kan. Phoenix, which finished the season 28-8, built an 11-point lead, 47-36, early in the second half before Essex stormed back in the final minutes to make things interesting. Essex knotted the score at 65-65 on a 3-pointer from all-tournament selection Dion Rogers (6'1''-PG) with 1:41 remaining. But instead of panicking, Phoenix dug in. "It was real nerve-racking," Phoenix freshman Brandon Brown said. "It got real tense, but we never gave up. This is what we've practiced so hard for." With just 39 seconds to play, 6-foot-11 sophomore Joel Feigler (6'10''-F) missed a breakaway dunk only to be bailed out by a basket interference call on Essex. The basket put Phoenix in front for good 67-65. Brown then converted 1 of 2 free throws to extend the lead to three. Essex scored its final basket with 12 seconds left to pull to within 68-67, but a pair of free throws by all-tournament guard Derreck Brooks (6'4''-G) and a final tally by Brown secured Phoenix's first national championship. Brooks was 10 for 10 from the foul line and scored a game-high 25 points. Brown, who was named tournament MVP, finished with 14 points and five assists. Feigler added 17 points and six rebounds. Head coach Matt Gordon , who was making his sixth national tournament appearance with Phoenix College, couldn't have been prouder of his team. "Our guys just go, they don't get rattled," Gordon said. "This team was built to win tournaments. I told our guys early on that this team could win a national championship and I meant it from the bottom of my heart. This team just has that mental toughness."
