LaGrange Wins USA South Men's Basketball Title - Mar 1, 2015
The 2015 USA South Men's Basketball Tournament championship game took place on Saturday, February 28 on the campus of Averett University in Danville, Virginia as sixth-seeded LaGrange College defeated fourth-seeded Maryville College, 70-64, to capture the program's second consecutive USA South Tournament title. Maryville started fast to take an early 20-9 lead but that was quickly erased as LaGrange went on a 14-3 run to take a 25-23 lead with three minutes remaining in the first half. After the two teams were tied heading into halftime, LaGrange built a six-point advantage halfway through the second half. Maryville battled back to get within two points with 16 seconds remaining but it was not enough as LaGrange captured the title. LaGrange was led by Nick Mitchell (6'3''-G/F-92) who led all scorers with 28 points in addition to eight rebounds and two assists. For his efforts during the three days of the tournament, Mitchell was named Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year. The Panthers also received 16 points from Justyn Olson (6'0''-PG). Maryville was led by Jaumonee Byrd (6'6''-C) who scored a team-high 20 points.
