Greenville Wins Championship in Front of Home Crowd-Mar 3, 2025
Home has been good to the Greenville University men's basketball team, capturing the 2025 SLIAC Championship on the home court on Saturday night. The title is the Panthers first since 2018, which also happens to be the last time they hosted the conference championship game. With the win the Panthers wrap up the season 12-1 on their home court and capture the program's third ever SLIAC Championship. Greenville topped Webster 115-104 in front of their fans. While tightly played, the game itself saw just two lead changes and two ties with Greenville controlling the game from the start thanks to an 8-2 run to open the game. Webster grabbed the lead at 13-12 with 14:57 on the clock in the first-half but Greenville responded with a layup from Carlos Crespo (6'0''-PG) on their next possession. Greenville opened up a 12-point lead in the first-half but saw the Gorloks make a push early in the second. Down 64-59, Jonah Hibbert (6'0''-PG) knocked down a triple to get a 7-2 run for the Gorloks going. Another Hibbert three at 18:05 evened the game up at 66-66 but that would be all the Gorloks could muster as Greenville responded with a 9-1 run of their own. Isaiah Griffin (5'10''-PG) hit a jumper with 17:11 on the clock, giving the Panthers the lead for good. The Panthers lead only grew from there as knocked down 12-of-17 free-throws in the second-half. Greenville shot 47-percent in the game, connecting on eight three-pointers and forcing 37 turnovers. Kiarie Patrick (6'3''-G) finished with 31 points for Greenville, earning Tournament MVP honors with teammates Carlos Crespo and Vincent Rodriguez (5'11''-PG) also earning All-Tournament spots. Greenville wins the SLIAC automatic qualifier spot to the 2025 NCAA Division III Tournament and awaits the selection show on Monday to find out the pairings. Alpha Diallo (6'3''-F/G) led Webster with 21 points and was named All-Tournament along with teammate Jemard Sykes (6'2''-G). Also picking up All-Tournament honors were Peewee Brown (6'2''-G/F) from Eureka College, Charles Nelson (6'2''-F) from Fontbonne University, and Cam Smith (6'6''-F) from MUW.
