Tigers Back on Top with 11th ODAC Trophy-Feb 29, 2024
Erase 17-Year Drought with Victory Over Washington and Lee
Hampden-Sydney College took command early in the Salem Civic Center on Sunday afternoon and never took its foot off the gas pedal as the Tigers returned to the top of the ODAC's men's basketball ranks with a 81-56 victory over Washington and Lee University for the program's first conference title since 2007.
Hampden-Sydney (26-2) led by as many as 19 points in the opening frame and saw its advantage balloon to 25 markers in the second half on the way to securing the Tigers 11th ODAC title, the most in conference history. H-SC's appearance in Salem was its 16th in an ODAC men's basketball championship game, while Washington and Lee (18-10) competed in the ODAC's final game for an eighth time.
As the ODAC champion, Hampden-Sydney earns one of 42 automatic bids into the Division III Men's Basketball Championship. The Generals and other conference programs must wait until Monday to learn if they earned one of 22 at-large selections to the field of 64 teams. The selection show will be shown on ncaa.com at 1:00 p.m. ET.
Tournament MOP Adam Brazil (6'1''-G) led all scorers with 27 points to go with five rebounds and two assists. He poured in five three-pointers among his 10-for-23 showing from the field. Davidson Hubbard (6'5''-F) and Josiah Hardy (6'6''-G) joined Brazil on the ODAC All-Tournament Team. Hubbard went for 18 points with nine rebounds, two assists, and four blocked shots. Hardy added 15 points and three boards.
Drew Harrrell led Washington and Lee with 15 points. He was 6-of-12 from the field with three rebounds, a steal, and a blocked shot on the way to being named to the All-Tournament Team. Robert DiSibio who joined Harrrell on the ATT and Jack d'Entremont registered 11 points each. D'Entremont added nine boards and two assists. DiSibio chpped in six rebounds and four assists.
Hampden-Sydney is now 63-35 (.643) in the ODAC Tournament, the most wins over any team in the conference postseason.
