Top-Seeded Wesleyan Outlasts Williams to Win Second NESCAC Title - Mar 4, 2022
Top-seeded Wesleyan University outscored No. 4 Williams, 14-11, in overtime to post a 78-75 victory in the NESCAC Men's Basketball Championship game. The Cardinals win their second NESCAC title in their third appearance in the championship game.
The Cardinals earn the NESCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will find out their opponent at 12:30 p.m. on Monday when the field is announced on NCAA.com.
Wesleyan and Williams split the two meetings during the regular season. In the rubber match, the game was evenly played throughout as if featured 16 ties and 20 lead changes.
Williams held a slim, 31-29, lead after 20 minutes. In the second stanza, Nate Karren (6'9''-C) drilled a 3-pointer to give the Ephs a 64-63 lead with 1:57 remaining in regulation. Wesleyan's Sam Peek made one of two free throws with 38 seconds left to knot the game up at 64-64. Williams had two looks from 3-point range, but neither attempt found the bottom of the net.
In the overtime, the team's traded the lead five times before a Preston Maccoux (6'5''-G) made a pair of free throws to push the Cardinals in front, 73-72 with 1:12 left. Wesleyan rattled off five straight points to build a 78-72 lead with seven seconds left and held on for the final margin, 78-75.
Maccoux and Jordan James (6'7''-F) paced the Cardinals with 18 points each and James added 13 rebounds. Nicky Johnson (5'10''-PG) chipped in 10 points and dished out seven assists. He had 14 helpers in the semifinal victory over Trinity on Saturday.
Karren led the Ephs with a game-high 19 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Cole Prowitt-Smith (6'4''-G) also grabbed six rebounds and handed out five assists while scoring 15 points.
