PITT-GREENSBURG MEN RIDE UPSET WAVE ALL THE WAY TO THIRD AMCC TITLE - Feb 29, 2016
Pitt-Greensburg is the AMCC men's basketball champion for 2016 and will represent the conference with an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The third seeded Bobcats upset #2 Penn State Behrend in the semifinals on Saturday and then upended top seeded Hilbert College, 76-74, on Sunday to claim their third conference championship and first since the 2000 season. The Bobcats were led by three seniors in the title game. Guard Jerell Figueroa (5'10''-PG) had 18 points and 4 assists; forward Rocco Contristano (6'3''-G) scored 19 points to go with 8 rebounds; and standout reserve wing Mike Connelly (6'3''-G) came through with 15 points and 5 boards. The Hawks, winners of the regular season title, were better on the glass than UPG but could not overcome a weak shooting day, especially at the free throw line. Nevertheless Hilbert had three players score in double figures: junior guard Jalen Smith (6'1''-G) (26 points), senior forward Jerame Owens (6'6''-F) (16 points, 20 rebounds) and junior guard Kirkland Ottey (5'10''-PG) (14 points, 4 assists).
