Coffeyville basketball wins NJCAA national championship for first time since 1962 - Apr 25, 2021

Cowley came storming back again, but the Coffeyville Red Ravens held them off. Off the Cowley last-second heave, Coffeyville's Larry White raced upcourt and threw down the game-sealing jam with two seconds left. Coffeyville head coach Jay Herkelman lifted his arms up as the bench wrapped him in their celebration huddle as the Red Ravens beat the Cowley Tigers 108-99 in the 2021 NJCAA Div. 1 men's national championship at the Sports Arena Saturday night. Coffeyville wins its first national championship since 1962. "This is just so awesome," Herkelman said. "Been in Coffeyville for 26 years and doing it. We brought a lot of good teams over here and haven't got it done. "It's just such an awesome feeling to be able to finally get this accomplished." Blaise Keita (6'10''-F-99) and Love Bettis (5'10''-PG) were named to the all-tournament team, and Tylor Perry (5'11''-PG) was tabbed the tournament's most valuable player. The Nebraska-commit Keita scored the game-high and new career-high 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds. "He was just a beast down there," Herkelman said. "I talked to him before the game about eating up every rebound that came around him, and he was doing that. He was scoring down there, dunking it and playing aggressive. Just really proud of him, and I just know he's just going to keep getting better and better. So, we got a bright future ahead of us." Bettis scored 12 points and hit a pair of free throws to put the game out of reach. Perry had 18 on five of 12 shooting and six of nine from the free-throw line. Bostyn Holt (6'7''-G) notched a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Red Ravens had seven players score in double figures. Cowley's Dalen Ridgnal (6'6''-F) and Mikel Henderson (5'11''-SG) were also named to the all-tournament team. Henderson finished with the team-high 21 points while Ridgnal added 17 points and seven rebounds. Coffeyville got off to a thrilling start and just seemed to not miss. Perry was electric in the first half and had some tough finishes at the rim. Leading 60-40 at the half and by 23 at one point, Cowley turned it on and started their comeback. With 1:33 left in regulation, Cowley's Kobe Campbell (6'2''-G) nailed a tough hanging-in-the-air layup to make it a one-possession game, 100-97. Herkelman said they could not get stops. In the timeouts, he said he told his guys to get some stops and rebound the ball, especially down the stretch. Cowley had made a comeback down more than 20 to the top seed Mineral Area. "It was a long ways from over," Herkelman said. "Even with six minutes to go, they knew it was a long ways from over, and obviously it was." Free throws have saved the Red Ravens down the stretch. After three straight offensive foul calls - two on Cowley and one of Coffeyville, Bettis executed two perfect free throws with 12 seconds to go, slipping the game back up to a two-possession lead. "Love is our best percentage free-throw shooter," Herkelman said. "Tylor, last year, was our best, and yeah, I got all the confidence in the world in him at the line. We wanted the ball in Love's hands there at the end because he's proven he doesn't mind that big moment. He made those big free throws for us to give us a little cushion." A lot of players will be coming back, including a full-level potential-filled Keita. Herkelman said this national title win will make them ravenous for next year. For now, this was Coffeyville's year. "It makes you hungry to try and do it again," Herkelman said. "A lot of coaches in the JUCO level that have won it, they had been giving me words of encouragement the last couple of days. 'It's your time. Get it done.' So, I really appreaciate that. It's just such an awesome feeling."

Bears capture first Men's Basketball championship in school history - Apr 25, 2021

The Des Moines Area (IA) Bears defeated Davidson-Davie (NC) 86-75 to win a thrilling 2021 NJCAA DII Men's Basketball Championship at the Mary Miller Center. The title is the first in program history in just their sixth tournament appearance all time. The No. 2 seeded Bears went through a tough road to reach the championship game, including facing region 11 rival Iowa Lakes in the semifinal round. Des Moines Area finished its 2020-21 campaign with an overall record of 21-5 and is the fourth region 11 team in the last five tournaments to win the DII National Championship. A back and forth offensive game between the Storm and Bears resulted in one of the most fast paced games of the tournament. Des Moines Area went on a 20-0 run late in the second half to give themselves a late lead. Brett Putz led his Des Moines Area Bears through an impressive run to the national championship. After qualifying for the tournament last year before it was cancelled due to COVID-19, the Bears returned as the 2 seed once again and wanted to finish what could have been last season. The 2021 North Central A Champions, Des Moines Area navigated a tough conference and in a difficult year for a chance to play for a National Championship. The Bears defeated conference rival, and 3rd place game winner, Iowa Lakes on its way to the National Championship. An offensive game from start to finish, both Des Moines Area and Davidson-Davie went on a 10+ point run during the second half, with both teams having a double digit lead at one point. Davidson-Davie held a 66-59 lead with just under eight minutes to play, but Des Moines Area would score 20 straight to take the lead and never surrender it. Davidson-Davie came out of the gate hot, getting an early 18-6 lead in the first half while making seven of their first 10 shots. The Storm held the lead for the first 10 minutes of the first half before the Bears clawed their way back into it. The game saw five lead changed with the last coming when Des Moines Area secured the lead with 5:40 left to play and never surrendered it. The Storm were led in scoring by freshman DJ Suggs (6'2''-G), who scored 20 points off the bench. Sophomore Javeon Jones (6'1''-G) was the backbone of this Davidson-Davie team, put together an 18 point, 7 rebound, and 5 assist performance. He averaged 18.4 points per game during the tournament and picked up all-tournament team honors. Sophomore Willie Guy (6'0''-PG) had been the heart and soul of this Bears team all season long. The point guard picked up seven points and 12 assists in the championship game, while playing the entire 40 minutes of action. For the tournament, he averaged 15.5 PPG and 8.5 PPG while earning a double-double in the first round win over No. 15 Southeast. The all-tournament team included South Suburban sophomore Deshawndre Washington (6'7''-G) who was the leading scorer in the country coming into tournament with 26.8 PPG. Mott sophomore Andre Bradford (6'3''-G) also headlined the all-tournament team, his tournament run included a game winning three-point basket in the 5th place game against Sandhills (NC) and a 35-point performance against Des Moines Area. In the Storms' second NJCAA DII tournament appearance in-a-row, Davidson-Davie put together an incredible season and tournament. The Storm entered the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed and picked up wins over No. 16 St. Clair County (MI), conference rival No. 8 Sandhills (NC), and No. 4 and undefeated Garrett (MD) before falling in the national title game. Davidson-Davie concluded the season with a 23-3 overall record and spent the entire season ranked in the top-10.
