From the halcyon days of Bob McAdoo - ''Do can do' - to other
future NBA standouts such as Rickey Green, Foots Walker, Shawn
Marion and Carl Landry to coaching legends such as Allen
Bradfield and Dan Sparks, count the current Vincennes University
Trailblazers and coach Todd Franklin among the greats in the program's
storied history. Third-seeded Vincennes defeated No. 8 seed
Ranger (Texas) 87-77 on Saturday to capture the Blazers' fourth
NJCAA men's basketball championship - their first since 1972.
Freshman forward Kevin Osawe (6'6''-F) scored 22 points and had 10
rebounds in earning Tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
Sophomore guard Keith Clemons (6'1''-G) contributed 17 points and
seven assists. It's been a remarkable journey for VU, which
surged to a 50-34 halftime lead and withstood Ranger's
second-half comeback. Ranked No. 2 in the final national poll,
the Blazers were bounced by Kaskaskia 78-76 in the semifinals of
the District 16 tourney at Ina, Illinois, but earned an at-large
bid to the NJCAA tourney at Hutch. Vincennes, which improved to
34-2, also won NJCAA championships in 1965, 1970 and '72. They
finished second in '86. Ranger ended 31-4. VU ousted defending
national champion South Plains (Texas) Friday in the semis to
advance the title game. The Blazers eliminated three successive
Texas teams in three consecutive days to win the title.
Franklin, named to the NJCAA Hall of Fame last year, recorded
his 600th career victory in a 72-60 decision over Odessa
Thursday in the quarterfinals. Courtesy of: courierpress.com

Kirkwood wins program's third men's basketball title - Mar

Everyone knew it would be a battle coming into tonight's
national title game at the NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball
Championship. For the second straight year, it was a clash
between the top-two seeds: No. 1 Kirkwood and No. 2 Johnson
County. Kirkwood and Johnson County traded early blows, swapping
the lead multiple times as the early going saw Johnson County
extend a 17-12 advantage. However, either immediate side of
halftime belonged to Kirkwood as the Eagles went on a 21-9 run
to close out the first half and take a seven-point advantage
into the locker room. The Eagles came out even more hot to start
the second half. A 10-2 start prompted a Johnson County timeout.
The Cavaliers would get the deficit down to 10 points shortly,
before a shot clock-beating three-pointer from Doug Wilson (6'7''-F) contributed to his game-high
30 points and helped the Eagles go on another quick 7-0 run to
push the game back to a 50-35 scoreline. Johnson County refused
to go away. Jaquaylon Mays (6'2''-G) went on a scoring spree in the
final 15 minutes to twice pull the Cavaliers within two point of
Kirkwood. Mays recorded 10 of his 13 total points in this
stretch. The Cavaliers held possession in a two-point game with
under 20 seconds to play. AJ Pleasant (PG) drove into the paint but
Kirkwood's Luke Appel drew a charge to permanently swing the
game in the Eagles' favor. It is the third men's basketball
national title in Kirkwood's program history. The other titles
came in 1998 and 2016. Coach of the Tournament Bryan Petersen was also at the helm of the 2016
championship team and now is a perfect 8-0 in Danville in two
appearances. Coming into tonight's championship game, Kirkwood
had won nine straight games by 10-plus points. In the
tournament, the Eagles took down North Central Missouri (96-66),
Niagara County (80-65), and Erie (84-70) before tonight's 64-58
win over Johnson County. The Eagles finish the year with a 31-4
record. It was the third time in the last four years that a
Region XI team has taken home the championship trophy. In
addition to Kirkwood's 2016 title, Southwestern also won the
tournament in 2017. Doug Wilson has been a scoring machine for the
Eagles all season. Wilson finished with a 30-point output in
tonight's finale to add to his three other double-figures
performances this tournament. That's a grand total of 92 points
this week for the South Dakota State signee. Johnson County's Nick Larkin (6'0''-PG) took home the Jack Cistriano
Best Small Man Award. Larkin produced back-to-back 18-point
performances in narrow victories over Lakeland (73-72) and Cecil
(81-78). In addition to Larkin, Johnson County's General Williams (6'3''-G) and David Turner earned
spots on the All-Tournament Team. Johnson County finishes the
season with a 31-5 record. Courtesy of:
