NJCAA D2 National Championships Bracket '12
No. 1 South Plains Prevails over No. 2
Northwest Florida for DI Men's Basketball Championship
- Mar 28, 2012Marshall Hendersons 32 points led No. 1 South Plains College (Texas) to a 81-68 over No. 2 Northwest Florida State in the national title game of the NJCAA Division I Mens Basketball Championship Saturday evening in Hutchinson, Kan. The contest was the first national title game since 1999 to feature the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams in Division I mens basketball and with the victory the Texans complete a 36-0 season, which is the first undefeated championship run since Indian Hills Community Colleges (Iowa) 1998 campaign. South Plains controlled the Raiders throughout the game, but could never put the Region 8 champs away. The Texans gave up two double-digit leads in the contest despite the fact they held the lead in all but just one minute of play. Henderson (right picture) had two big moments in the game that helped the Texans keep the Raiders at bay. With 1:24 left in the first half he elevated for a 3-point attempt, found the bottom of the net and was fouled. The four-point play put the SPC lead at six as they went into the locker room. Late in the second half as the Texans led 76-68 with just under two minutes to play, Henderson netted a long-range 3-pointer just as the shot clock expired to put South Plains in front 79-68, which sealed the second national championship for South Plains in five seasons. Tournament MVP Yanick Moreira had seven points and hauled in 16 rebounds. The Angola native averaged 11.0 points and 11.8 rebounds in four games in Hutchinson. Northwest Florida State was led by Rod Ruckers 16 points and 14 rebounds. The Raiders end their 2012 season as national runner-up with a 32-2 overall record. NJCAA D1 Awards 2012 - Apr 1, 2012

D2: Mott Bears make history, win fourth NJCAA
national basketball championship -
Mar 25, 2012Mott Community College solidified itself as the best National Junior College Athletic Association Division II men's basketball program in the country Saturday night. The No. 1-ranked Bears defeated Community College of Rhode Island, 70-60, to win their fourth national championship. No other NJCAA Division II mens basketball program has won four national titles. 'I did not realize that', Mott coach Steve Schmidt said. 'I didn't realize that, we were just focused on the task at hand, but thats incredible. These kids aligned and came together Im happy for Flint. Weve got a tough city, sometimes a rough city with some things, but weve got the best basketball program in the country at our level and thats something our community can be proud of.' Leading the way for Mott was John Taylor (6'1''-G) with 23 points and six assists. Ralph Eason (6'1''-G) added 22 points and five assists and Jacob Perry (5'10''-G) scored nine for the Bears. Taylor was named the tournament MVP as he led the Bears in scoring in all four games. In this day and age, its rare for all of your players to like each other, but this group really does and I think thats what makes them such a great team, Schmidt said. A kid like John Taylor takes a lot of shots, but its because a hes incredibly talented and I give him a lot of leeway. Theres no animosity over it. Our team understands that. It doesnt matter who does what, they just play for each other. Mott (35-1) led from the opening tip to the final buzzer. For every jab Rhode Island threw, the Bears answered with an uppercut, fending off rally after rally to secure the win. Mott jumped out in front early, leading 15-7 after a matter of minutes before building a 23-9 lead and forcing a Rhode Island timeout with 9:46 left in the first half. The Bears led by as much as 17, but closed the first half making just one of their last 11 shots. The cold streak allowed Rhode Island to battle back and cut the deficit to within six points, 29-23, at halftime. The Bears distanced themselves again to start the second half. Rhode Island got the game to as close as five points (41-36) with 15:53 left before Mott extended its lead back to double digits and secured the win. Our kids are confident, Schmidt said. We were the team with the most energy at the end of the day our guys had the heart and determination and thats why were going to take that trophy back home to Flint. Eason put the game on ice for Mott with an old-fashioned three-point play, putting the Bears up 66-53 with 1:33 left on the clock. After finishing as the national runner-up last season, going out on top was the one and only goal for the Bears this time around. This one might be the sweetest one because nobody expected this, said Schmidt of the four national championships. We didnt bring a lot back from last year and nobody expected this, nobody except us. For Schmidt, whose name has already been associated as a possible candidate for the Central Michigan University job, the unity of his players, as well as the close-knit atmosphere of the Mott program is what makes winning with the Bears so special. I live vicariously through my players, so to watch them go through this is a thrill, Schmidt said. Ive got former players calling me right now, some playing overseas in Europe. They stayed up all night to watch us play. This program is special and I love being a part of it. This team, our school, these fans, its a special basketball program. Saturday night in Danville, Ill. the Bears capped off a special season. Courtesy of www.mlive.com NJCAA D2 Awards 2012 - Apr 11, 2012

Sandhills (N.C.) wins DIII title
- Mar 17, 2012After winning their first round game by a buzzer-beater and their semifinal contest in overtime (both by just one point), Sandhills Community College (N.C.) posted a convincing 101-86 win over Cedar Valley (Texas) to win the 2012 NJCAA Division III Mens Basketball Championship Saturday night on the campus of Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. The Flyers took control early in the contest and posted a 54-37 halftime lead. In the second half, Sandhills led by as many as 26 points. Cedar Valley tried to climb back into the game, cutting the Flyers lead to 91-82 but could not get any closer. SCCs Daquain Towns (6'0''-G) was named Tournament MVP, posting 18 points and four assists. He pulled the Flyers out of elimination in the first-round with a coast-to-coast, game-winning lay-up to get past Brookdale Community College (N.J.). Towns finished the tournament with 48 points. Sandhills, which just reinstated intercollegiate athletics on its campus after cutting all sports in the 1980s, becomes the first team from North Carolina to win the DIII mens basketball national title. The Flyers finish the year at 30-6 and end the season winning 11-consecutive contests. BOX-SCORE Courtesy of www.njcaa.org NJCAA D3 Awards 2012 - Apr 12, 2012
