Four-star point guard Sania Richardson commits to SMU- June 28, 2024Class of 2025 point guard Sania Richardson has committed to SMU. The 5-foot-5 point guard from Ada, Oklahoma is rated as a four-star prospect by ESPN. Richardson chose SMU over offers from North Carolina, Florida State, Clemson and others. During a conversation with 247Sports, Richardson explained why she chose to be a Mustang. "I committed to SMU because Coach Toyelle (Wilson) and the rest of the coaching staff had a plan for me," Richardson said. "They're going to the ACC, so I know they're going to take care of me.” "They love short guards like me, so I'm excited," she added. "They see me fitting in with their offense and being a freshman point guard that can go."
Head coach Toyelle Wilson was key in landing Richardson. Since Richardson's official visit last September, Coach Wilson and the staff have stayed in constant communication with her, leaving a big impression. "I knew I wanted to commit ever since my official visit," she said. "Everything was so fun and nothing was forced. There were no awkward moments. It was just fun and it went smoothly. I pictured myself being there, being in front of that program and playing under Coach T." Richardson believes she will bring leadership to the program as she'll strive to get on the floor as a freshman. "I add leadership to this team," she explained. "I know I'm coming in as a freshman, but for me, I would want to start and get that program off to a good start. As a point guard, I want to lead and help the team any way I can." Richardson is also confident that SMU can bounce back from their subpar 2023-2024 season. The Mustangs finished 14-16 with a loss to Tulane in the AAC championship game. She believes her commitment can help start a wave of local talent coming to SMU and changing the direction of the program as the Mustangs head to a new conference. "They recruited some good players out of the transfer portal,” she said. “I think going from the American into the ACC is a big change, but they'll make some noise. They got great pieces on that team already and I'm hoping my commitment will bring in more Oklahoma and Texas kids. Since we're in the ACC now, hopefully we can bring in more top talent and we can change the program together." Courtesy of: 247sports.com |
