Two incoming Michigan women’s basketball players have earned perhaps the most prestigious honor an American high school basketball player can receive. Wolverines commits Olivia Olson and Syla Swords have been selected for the 2024 McDonalds All-American Game, which released its boys’ and girls’ rostersTuesday. The future teammates are both on the East team, which will give them an early opportunity to play alongside each other before they both head to Ann Arbor. Swords and Olson are both rated as top-15 recruits in the 2024 class by ESPN, with Swords at No. 11 and Olson at No. 15. Michigan is one of just three programs with more than one player in the top 15, with South Carolina and Texas being the others. Ohio State, which has a commitment from No. 3 prospect Jaloni Cambridge, is the only other current Big Ten member with a player in the top 15. The recruiting success for the Wolverines has come after a stretch in which they have gone 64-23 over the past three full seasons, which included trips to the Sweet 16 in 2021 and the Elite Eight in 2022. Prior to that, Michigan had never been past the first week of the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines have made the NCAA Tournament in five of the past six seasons under coach Kim Barnes Arico, a feat they had achieved six times from 1982 through 2017. At 13-6 this season, they were selected as the “last team in” in ESPN’s most recent mock bracket.
