Shockers Pull Away In OT for Win Over Bulls- March 14, 2023
The NOVA Bulls led by Rookie Earnest Jenkins Jr. had 5 players in double figures however it wasn't enough to hold off the Hartford Shockers in Overtime in an entertaining Mid-Atlantic contest that saw multiple lead changes in Gainesville VA. In a defense stand-off, the score at the end of the 1st quarter was 23-23 as both teams were figuring one another out. After exchanging leads with the highest lead going into halftime being Hartford by 7 points, the Shockers went into half time with a 53-50 lead led by Tylon Smith (6'2''-G-1992, college: S.Connecticut, agency: Interperformances), Jr. with 15 points and Saul Phiri (6'4''-G-1997, college: La Salle) with 11. The Bulls were led by Earnest Jenkins Jr. with 10 points and fellow 1st year player Julian Washington with 9 points. The Shockers jumped out on an 11-0 run to start the 3rd to push the lead up 14 before the Bulls turned up the intensity defensively to bring the lead back to down to 7 going into the final stanza. The Bulls took the lead half way into the 4th quarter led by 10 straight points by 6'6" Swingman Jonathan Sula (F). Both teams had a chance to ice the game near the end of regulation. Off a Shockers miss, Jerry Carter (16 points, 8 rebs) received the ball with 27 seconds left, used a high ball screen and narrowly missed a go ahead 3 pointer with 11 seconds to go. The rebound was secured by Shockers big man Chase Danielson (6'2''-G) who passed the ball up to Mike Mallory whose 3 at the buzzer was wide left. In overtime it was 2 big three pointers from reserve Shockers guard Scottie Dulaire and a number of timely rebounds that secured the victory for the Shockers. |
