It's still early in the ECBL season, but the Florence Wildcats are looking like a serious contender for a title. On April 3 the Wildcats remained undefeated with a victory on the road against Coastal Elite Pirates 149-134.
Building a team from scratch in 2016, the Florence Wildcats (5-0) are on pace for their best season to-date. Florence went 7-5 during their inaugural season of 2017, followed by 5-6 and 2-11 campaigns. Their sights are set on a Southeast Division title and more knowing the league championship goes through the Southern Conference.
Veteran guard Anton Greer (6'3''-G-89, college: Benedict) led the way in their latest victory scoring 44 points while dishing out seven assists. AJ Caldwell (6'0''-PG, college: FMU) and Sam Dotson (6'1''-SG-90, college: Voorhees) each poured in 35 points while Brian Jones (6'4''-F) added 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Rookie guard Frankie Johnson (5'9''-SG, college: Wingate) came oh so close to a triple-double with 15 points, nine rebounds and 12 assists. Johnson is a former Wingate University standout playing two seasons in the South Atlantic Conference after transferring from The Citadel.
Leading the Pirates was Justin Jones (6'2''-SG, college: Bethany, KS) who scored 31 points and Matt Bingaya (6'5''-PF-94, college: Fairmont St.) with 29.
The Wildcats return to action on Sunday in Florence when they host the Carolina Crusaders. Game time at Pearl Moore Gymnasium is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
