River Lions net title: Niagara holds off Bandits in CEBL final-Aug 12, 2024
Khalil-Ullah Ahmad (6'3''-G-1996, college: CS Fullerton) scored 23 points, including the game-ending layup with the game down to next point wins, to give the Niagara River Lions a 97-75 victory over the Vancouver Bandits for their first Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) championship in franchise history. Nathan Cayo (6'7''-F-1997, college: Richmond), with 25 points; Aaryn Rai (6'6''-F-1998, college: Dartmouth), 15; Omari Moore (6'6''-G-2000, college: SJSU, agency: Diamond Sports), 14; and Loudon Love (6'8''-C-1998, college: Wright St., agency: Green Sports Management), 10; also scored in double digits for the River Lions who held off the late-surging Bandits after leading 87-74 heading when the target score of 96 was set. Cayo and Moore led Niagara in rebounds with eight each. Sunday night’s neutral-site game played before an announced crowd of 3,031 at Verdun, wrapped by the CEBL’s Championship Weekend in Montreal. The River Lions opened the four-team tournament on Friday night by edging the host Alliance 78-75 while the Bandits held off the Calgary Surge 89-87 in their semifinal. Western Conference champion Vancouver outrebounded Niagara, the No. 1 seed from the east, 52-39 and outscored the River Lions 22-11 in second-chance points. With the win, Niagara avenged a 105-83 road loss in its lone game against Vancouver during the regular season. Niagara took its first title since joining the spring-summer pro league as one of its six founding franchises at the beginning of the 2019 season. Since joining the CEBL six years ago, the River Lions have qualified for the final four weekend five times. In 2021, they lost to the Edmonton Stingers in the final and fell short in the semifinals on three occasions: to the then-Hamilton Honey Badgers in 2019 and to the Scarborough Shooting Stars in 2022 and 2023. The River Lions spent three seasons playing a fall-winter schedule in the National Basketball League of Canada before becoming part of the CEBL. Niagara travelled to Montreal without Jahvon Blair (6'4''-G-1998, college: Georgetown), a second-team all-star and a nominee for Canadian player of the year award. Contract commitments to a pro league in France prevented him from completing the playoffs with the River Lions.
