Foresters defeat No. 1 seeded St. Norbert to advance to first NCAA Tournament - Feb 23, 2019

Lake Forest College earned its first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in program history after defeating Midwest Conference (MWC) regular season champion St. Norbert College 68-64 in Saturday afternoon's MWC Tournament final.
The Foresters were facing tough odds as they played the top seeded Green Knights on the road and entered the game having lost both of the regular season matchups. However, Lake Forest came in confident as it scored the opening five points of the day after taking down the MWC's top offense in Grinnell College in Friday's semifinal.
St. Norbert had a response to that opening run as the Green Knights would all afternoon in a game that featured 16 ties and neither team holding a lead larger than seven points. Joe Lemon (6'5''-F), the Green Knight free throw hero from Friday's semifinal win over Monmouth, hit another pair from the line to send the game into halftime all tied at 34-34.
Free throws are what kept St. Norbert in the game in the first half as they made 5-of-6 while the Foresters only attempt two. In contrast, Lake Forest knocked down five three-pointers to the Green Knights one, lead by senior Danny Sotos (6'5''-F) who scored 11 points in the first 20 minutes. Sotos finished just behind sophomore guard Sean Espinosa (6'0''-PG)'s 12 first half points. For St. Norbert, Joe Ciriacks (6'3''-G) and Wade Geenen (5'10''-PG) led the way with eight points apiece.
St. Norbert came out firing in the second half as Nolan Beirne opened with a layup and Ciriacks made his first three of the game sending the Green Knights out to a six-point lead, their largest of the afternoon. Just like the first half, the trailing team had a response and the game bounced back-and-forth until it was tied at 64-64 with 2:48 remaining.
Out of a timeout, Forester Jordan Moran made a layup to give Lake Forest the lead then forced a Green Knight turnover. Beirne came up with a huge block off an Espinosa layup attempt, unfortunately for St. Norbert, the ball went out of bounds meaning it stayed with the Foresters. The Green Knights were then forced to foul with Espinosa sealing the win with a pair of free throws.
Espinosa and Sotos tied for a game-high with 19 points and combined for 11 rebounds while Arslanian and Moran had 14 points apiece. Geenen had a team-high 18 points for St. Norbert followed by Ciriacks 11 while Beirne just missed a double-double with eight points and ten rebounds.
