DBU claims 2018 Heartland tournament championship - Mar 6, 2018

Dallas Baptist University claimed its second tournament championship in three seasons after knocking off Oklahoma Christian 77-57 in the championship game of the 2018 Heartland Conference tournament.
DBU was incredibly balanced on the offensive end of the floor with four players in double figures and two more players with eight points. Jordan Manse (6'1''-G) led the way for the Patriots with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting, followed by Carter Brown (6'2''-G), Boy Van Vliet (6'4''-G-94) and Chandler Jacobs (6'2''-G) who all scored 11 points. Senior Patrick Burke (6'7''-F-96), who took home tournament MVP honors added eight points and six rebounds for the Patriots.
DBU jumped out quickly with an 11-2 lead just four minutes in and never let the Eagles find a rhythm on offense. OC shot 32.2 percent in the game on 19-of-59 shooting, and just 26.7 percent in the second half. Elijah Strickland (6'3''-G) and Charles Shaw (6'0''-PG) both scored team-highs of 13 points on a combined 10-25 shooting.
After jumping out to the big lead, DBU led 43-27 heading into halftime. Out of the break, OC got a three from Charles Shaw and a pair of free throws from Jordan Box (5'10''-PG) to close the lead to 13. A Van Vliet jumper at 16:12 that sparked a 14-3 run over the next several minutes to put the game out of reach for the Eagles. The lead dipped below 20 just one time following the run when Miroslav Jaksic (6'11''-C-95, college: Grand Canyon) free throw pulled OC back to within 19.
For their efforts in the tournament, Van Vliet, Jacobs, Strickland and Box along with tournament MVP Patrick Burke were named to the All-Tournament Team for 2018. St. Edward's junior Landon Goesling was also named to the team after tying a conference record for points in a single-tournament game with 35.
