BOISE, Idaho (March 15, 2019) - A game-winning jumper by freshman Desirae Hansen (6'0''-G) with four seconds remaining capped off a furious fourth quarter comeback to propel Portland State to its second NCAA Division I Tournament berth Friday afternoon with a 61-59 win over Eastern Washington in the Big Sky Championship game at CenturyLink Arena.
Facing its largest deficit of the game at 57-50 with less than six minutes to play, a three-pointer by Sidney Rielly (6'0''-G) sparked the fourth-seeded Vikings to an 11-2 run as buckets from Jordan Stotler (6'3''-F) and Kylie Jimenez (5'6''-G) helped PSU knot the game up at 57-all with 2:28 remaining.
A jumper by the Big Sky Tournament MVP Ashley Bolston (6'2''-G) with 1:50 to play lifted Portland State (25-7) to its first lead since the 7:41 mark in the third quarter at 59-57. Bolston recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds in the title game.
'I knew after that Montana State first half last Saturday that were going to win this,' said Portland State head coach Lynn Kennedy . 'We were a different team and we locked it in. Give Eastern Washington credit today, they played a great game. I'm proud of all of our players in what they've done. It shows how special they are and their true character today to come out and be on top.'
Freshman Jessica McDowell-White (5'6''-PG-00), one of six players named to the all-tournament team, rallied the Eagles back to a tie game with a layup with 20 seconds left.
Following Hansen's jumper, the Eagles got one last look with a last-second attempt but a corner jumper by Violet Kapri Morrow (5'8''-G-97) bounced off the rim and sent the Vikings to the Big Dance.
'He (Coach Kennedy) put the ball in my hands, told me what I needed to do and what to look for, and he gave me the trust so I just shot the ball,' Hansen said. 'Every little kid dreams of hitting a shot like that and you just shoot it for fun and one day it becomes a reality.'
Portland State became just the third team seeded at No. 4 or lower to claim the Big Sky Championship, joining the Vikings' 2010 squad when they were seeded fifth and Montana's 2011 team that was seeded fourth.
No. 6 seed Eastern Washington (13-20) was led by senior Alissa Sealby (6'0''-F) who totaled 15 points while McDowell-White added 14 points.
'Congratulations to Eastern Washington on an incredible run, they were playing their best basketball in March," Kennedy said. "That was not a number six seed I'll tell you that."
Kapri Morrow, Jimenez, Northern Colorado's Savannah Smith and Idaho's Mikayla Ferenz (5'10''-G) rounded out the Big Sky All-Tournament Team.
Portland State opens up NCAA Tournament play next week and will learn its opening round opponent Monday when the NCAA Selection Show airs on ESPN at 7 p.m. ET.
