WEST COAST BASKETBALL LEAGUE LAYOFFS : Santa Barbara Breakers fall short of another title
June 6, 2010 7:38 AM

The quest is over.

Despite holding a late five-point advantage, the Santa Barbara Breakers weren't able to hold and fell to the Los Angeles Buzz 128-125 in the WCBL semifinals Saturday night at SBCC's Sports Pavilion.

The loss ended the Santa Barbara Breakers' quest for a third consecutive league championship.

With the score tied at 125, the Buzz's Durwin Williams (6'6''-F-84, college: Montana St.-Northern) scored after a pass from JuShay Rockett (6'5''-F-84, college: Alaska-Fairb.) to give the visitors a 127-125 lead, which they held to the final horn.

'I just knew JuShay was going to get a good look, so I was just going to crash no matter what,' Williams said. 'I crashed it and he tipped the ball right to where I was at and then I saw big (Mike) Boone right there so I had to adjust my shot and I went up and under and got the foul call. It was just amazing.

'It was one of the biggest shots I ever made in my life.'

Williams scored a career-high 35 points to put the Buzz in today's 1 p.m. championship game against Newport Beach Surf.

'This is a big win for us,' Williams said. 'We came in here with five players, our coach had to play and we just stuck it out.'

The Buzz were shorthanded because of scheduling difficulties which resulted when Santa Barbara Breakers coach and league commissioner Curt Pickering (agency: Prossin Sports Management ) moved the playoffs up a week.

'We almost didn't come, because we only had five guys and one had to go to work but he missed work to come,' Buzz coach Burrell Lee said. 'It was a team effort.'

The Santa Barbara Breakers led 121-116 with 3:29 left to play.

'You know, we had leads,' Pickering said. 'We were up 121-116, what did we do? We didn't rebound, we followed them.'

Bryce Sheldon (6'6''-G/F-84) scored 16 points in the second half. The biggest of his points were a bucket that tied the game at 124 with 1:34 left.

After the final horn sounded, Lee says he offered to shake Pickering's hand only to get snubbed.

'I walked over there, extended my hand and he said, 'I don't want to shake your hand,'' Lee said.

Before the playoffs Lee criticized Pickering's running of the league. Lee alleged that Pickering doesn't keep accurate statistics so that he can use players in the playoffs who haven't played in the regular season.

'This season, there's been greater negative forces working against me that it took the fun out of this game,' Pickering said.
