Santa Barbara Breakers plagued by controversy as playoffs begin

June 5, 2010 7:41 AM

The Santa Barbara Breakers will open the WCBL playoffs under a cloud of controversy today.

WCBL Commissioner and Santa Barbara Breakers coach Curt Pickering (agency: Prossin Sports Management ) was criticized by a rival coach for several infractions to give the Santa Barbara Breakers a competitive edge.

Los Angeles Buzz coach Burrell Lee said that Pickering abruptly shortened the season's length, initially disqualified the second-place Los Angeles Buzz from playoff contention without provocation, and will use illegal players in the postseason.

'I've never seen anything like this before where you remove the number two,' Lee said. 'He took us out because he didn't want to play us.'

Lee claims that Pickering wanted to disqualify the Los Angeles Buzz (8-3) because he wanted the Santa Barbara Breakers (5-5) to essentially get an automatic trip to the WCBL championship game.

In the alleged scheme, the Santa Barbara Breakers would face the winner of Long Beach Lights Out and Marina Del Rey Advantage in the semifinals, while Newport Beach Surf (9-1), Ventura County Jets (5-6) would play on the other side of the bracket.Instead, the Santa Barbara Breakers play the Los Angeles Buzz - who beat Marina Del Rey Advantage 146-104 - in a semifinal at SBCC's Sports Pavilion tonight at 7:15.

Pickering vehemently denied any claims that the Los Angeles Buzz had been disqualified.

'They qualified, they're eligible and they are supposed to play,' Pickering said.

Pickering said that the reason the Los Angeles Buzz didn't get a bye is because the Santa Barbara Breakers are hosting the tournament and must therefore play at least one game in the semifinals.

Pickering compared this year's setup to the way the NBA seeds division leaders above teams with higher records if they are not on top of their division.

'I have an element in this league that I've never had,' Pickering said. 'We've always had camaraderie and that person lives 100 miles south and he's trying to damage the good of what's been going on. He's trying to destroy the good of basketball in Santa Barbara.'

Lee also claims that Pickering moved up the playoffs to this weekend so that the Los Angeles Buzz would be without the services of Vincent Camper (6'3''-G-85, college: Cal.St.-Los Angeles), who's visiting his fiance in Utah, and possibly without guard M''Jumbe Williams.. This would essentially take L.A.'s two best players out of the lineup, Lee said.

Pickering dismissed the claim, saying that it was absolutely absurd that he would change the entire playoff format because of another player's travel plans.

Pickering said that the playoffs were rescheduled at Lee's request because the Los Angeles Buzz are in three different leagues and that their players are starting to feel fatigued.

'His players are getting tired because they have to play in so many games,' Pickering said.

Lee also accused Pickering reporting false statistics so that he can fiddle with the official score sheets and thereby add players who haven't actually played in the regular season.

'I want to see who's on that court,' Lee said. 'I want to catch him in the act.'

Pickering - who said he will not dress a player in the playoffs who hasn't played a regular season game - countered by saying that Lee is the one who wants to use extra players.

'Burrell is upset because he says that he's going to lose his one player, Vincent Camper who's going to see his girlfriend in Utah, but he wants to add players,' Pickering said.

Despite his accusations, Lee decided not to withdraw from the tournament in hopes of playing Newport Beach Surf in Sunday's finals.

'I just want to see the look on his face when he has to pay Sunday for two teams to play and his team isn't one of them,' Lee said.

According to Lee, who said he will remove the Los Angeles Buzz from the WCBL next season, each game costs the Santa Barbara Breakers nearly $2,000 in rent to SBCC.

'This is all business,' Lee said, 'you hit him where it hurts. You hit him in his pocketbook.'
