WUSBA to move basketball season to a fall schedule; No air conditioning in some gyms - May 31, 2011

Atlanta, Ga. (May 31, 2011) ----The Women's United States Basketball Association (WUSBA) announced today it will move its basketball season to the fall. The season will begin on August 27, 2011 and end on November 4, 2011. The final preparation for the new time frame has begun. The league has all the necessary preparations set to properly conduct a successful basketball season. The season will field fifteen teams to begin its inaugural campaign. 'We set out to deliver twenty basketball teams and to play this summer, however, with no air conditioning in some of our gyms, Raleigh hit hard by the tornado and scheduling conflicts in seven other gymnasiums with summer camps and minor league baseball, the obstacles made it impossible to play ball over this summer, said WUSBA vice president Kenneth Green.

'We had originally planned to begin this summer, however when we discovered that four of our venues did not have central air conditioning, we had no choice. Everyone associated with the Women's United States Basketball Association has the basketball players safety first and foremost on their minds. We will accomplish all that is necessary to maintain the safe environment for our teams. We are truly grateful to be accepted in these great cities and towns, said Duane Allen Jenkins WUSBA president and C.E.O. ' We will honor all coaches and player agreements for the new schedule'.

'In the beginning, I stated that the WUSBA would assist female basketball players to continue their careers. We have created a system that will bring our league right underneath the WNBA. We plan to utilize former WNBA players as coaches and league staff. We will begin our inaugural season with 15 teams that are united in their dedication to bring top quality basketball to our team cities. The teams, coaches and players will share a common objective and a commitment to our fans' satisfaction; we will work together as community partners with our team cities.'

The following is the final list of teams for the WUSBA 2011 basketball season:

The Piedmont Division consists of the Charlotte Blue Wave, the Columbia Breeze, Winston Salem Cardinals and the Augusta Raging River

The Appalachian Division houses Nashville Thunder, the Chattanooga Royal, the Knoxville Reign and the West Virginia Capitals.

The Atlantic Division has the Virginia Colonials, the Jacksonville Surf, the Savannah Seahawks and the Charleston Cadets

The Southern Division fields the Atlanta Platinum, the Macon Storm and the Birmingham Starz

'We had planned to start with twenty teams to begin with, however we could not lock down arenas in Tallahassee, Nashville, Lexington, Montgomery, Norfolk, and Raleigh just took a direct hit from that devastating tornado, so we go with fifteen teams.'

'We do not own any of these venues such as we are at the mercy of the school or university. When I discovered that four of our gymnasiums had no central air, we had to make a decision. Playing in the fall eliminates this issue. We are now arranging venue agreements to complete everything it takes to run a basketball league in the pursuit of our original goals.

We did even think to ask if these gymnasiums had central AC. I just assumed that they did, when I found out that the C.E. Gaines Center at Winston Salem State University did not have AC, I called all of the other venues and I was informed that four did not have central AC in the gym Virginia Union and Norcross High School does not have central AC.

'As I stand before you today, it is my pleasure to announce our march to the opening day of our 2011 basketball season; it is our goal to conduct proper preparation for the season.

Accordingly, I am pleased to announce the final formation of the for mentioned teams that will compete in the 2011 Women's United States Basketball Association basketball season. We will conduct our player acquisition in a manner consistent with major professional women's basketball.'

'We will present a great competitive product that will be entertaining to our fans, our team cities and the profession of basketball as a whole. We are extremely excited about future of our league and our 14 teams. We now have the time to do it right and I stand here today to assure that everything will be ready for our 2011 basketball season.'

'We'll see you, your family and your friends courtside in August 2011.'

'The Women's United States Basketball Association was formed in late March 2010, but the WUSBA concept was originally founded in July 2007. Through the months and years, we have faced a variety of challenges -- some of which seemed insurmountable at the time. The WUSBA will persevere through the tough economic adversities our country has faced and the WUSBA will persevere through this one, as well -- to emerge with a framework for the future, one that everyone will be proud to be associated with -- where our players and coaches have an opportunity to achieve their goals.'
