We sat down with United Basketball League Commissioner Ozzie Denson to discuss the upcoming UBL Season, changes within the league, and how the NBA Lockout may possibly affect the UBL.

First of all, Coach, I would like to congratulate you and your team, the Texas Wranglers, for winning the UBL title. Can you talk a bit about the victory and your team's path to the championship?

Coach Denson: Well, it was a great victory. It was a hard fought victory. In the UBL you have to play 2 games in one day to become a champion. Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi, and Tulsa were the final four. The winners of the first games play in the championship game.

We played Mississippi and Arkansas took on Tulsa. We ended up facing Arkansas (in the finals) with a one point differential the whole game. Whoever executed the best in the last 3 minutes was going to win. I think we executed a little bit better in those last 3 minutes to pull out the victory. It was a great win.

Did you initially expect to win it all?

CD:
Yeah, that was our goal to win it all. It was our fourth season. It was just our time... We lost a lot of players to the next level, but that is what we (UBL) do. We develop players and move them ahead. We had a good core; a good group of veterans and young guys that had just come in... They played well. It worked out very well.

This season of the UBL promises to have many exciting changes to both the on court product and corporate structure. what can the fans of the UBL expect to see this season?

CD: This season as fan, you can expect a professional product. In the UBL we average about 100-120 points per game. You (teams) have to be able to put up some points. You also have to play some good defense in this league. Every team is in it to win it, but you have to be well coached and have some great players. These guys can flat out play.

Corporately, have there been any changes or modifications?

CD: This year, We have more corporate sponsors than ever before. Our sponsors know we have been around 5 seasons, and that our league is growing. They also know that we do a great job of marketing our teams, our players, and promoting our sponsors.

We pride ourselves in being a professional organization that pays our players and makes sure the fans see the best product on the court. Our standards are very high, and we have a great business plan for our teams and our organization. We have never lost a UBL team. Once a UBLTeam starts the season, it finishes the season. In fact, we have never had a UBL team to fold in 5 years of us doing this.

While the UBL Season is predominantly run during the Spring, there is a possibility of the NBA lockout bleeding into your season. Do you see this as having a negative effect on the UBL.

CD: No, it will help our league. I deal with the management of teams both in the NBA and internationally. If anything, a lockout will bring more notoriety to our league and players. We had three callups last year. Two players were called up to the Mavericks, and one player went to the D-league. A lockout will give our players a chance to be seen by more people and increase their chances of being called up to the next level.

When does the UBL Season begin?

CD:
Our season starts March 17th. Before that we do preseason games. We try to get in at least four or five games. The majority of our team is usually selected by then. We hold tryouts and select the twelve best basketball playing athletes.

Any final thoughts?

CD: At UBL our motto is 'Come get some.' We want our fans to be satisfied We provide a family friendly product with players that carry themselves with professionalism, and a game that has very skilled and well coached athletes
