Lancaster sparks UPEI women’s basketball team to a weekend sweep

Grace Lancaster (5'9''-G) sparked the UPEI Panthers to back-to-back wins over the Saint Mary’s Huskies in AUS Women’s Basketball Conference play. Lancaster scored a game-high 27 points and went 5-for-7 from three-point range in leading the Panthers to a 73-48 home-court win at the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre on Nov. 1. The Panthers, who opened the regular season with two road losses against the UNB Reds (4-0), also defeated the Huskies 64-40 on Oct. 31. Saint Mary’s is also 2-2. Along with Lancaster’s hot shooting, Lily Vrugteman (5'10''-G) and Devon Lawlor (5'9''-G) also made key offensive contributions on Nov. 1. Vrugteman scored 13 points and Lawlor added 12. Vrugteman and Ingrid Khuong) each hauled in eight rebounds. Molly Healy (5'6''-G) led Saint Mary’s with 13 points. The Panthers led 50-23 at halftime. On Oct. 31, Lawlor (12), Karla Benitz (11), Lancaster (10) and Vrugteman (10) led UPEI’s balanced offence. Khuong contributed 10 boards. Emily Dikdan (6'1''-F, college: Jessup) scored 16 points to pace the Huskies. The Panthers travel to Sydney, N.S., to face the Cape Breton Capers (0-4) on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. and Nov. 8 at 2 p.m.
