Gwynedd Mercy wins ECAC Men's Basketball Championship, 75-71 - Mar 8, 2020
The Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins overcame a 10-point deficit and fended off a couple of Rutgers University-Newark rallies to capture the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Men's Basketball Championship, 75-71, in front of a hometown crowd Sunday afternoon in Gwynedd Valley, Pa. Rich Dunham (6'1''-G) led the way for the Griffins with 24 points, including making 9-of-10 free throw tries, and Donaven Spencer (6'5''-F) had seven rebounds and three steals to go along with nine points. Nathaniel Walker was also in double figures for Gwynedd Mercy with 12 points. Dunham was named the Most Valuable Player of the ECAC Tournament for his efforts during the week. Chase Barneys (5'11''-PG) paced Rutgers-Newark with 20 points, and Dante Ralph (6'6''-C) had 12 points and nine rebounds. Gwynedd Mercy led by three points midway through the first half, but Rutgers-Newark strung together scoring runs of 8-0 and 17-4 overall to open up a 35-25 advantage with 5:43 left in the opening 20 minutes. After that, however, Gwynedd scored the next nine points to come within one at 35-34 with 3:16 to go and were within a point at 38-37 a couple of minutes later, before the Scarlet Raiders took a 40-38 lead into the halftime locker room. Rutgers-Newark held a 45-40 advantage just over two minutes into the second half, but Gwynedd Mercy ripped off 10-straight points to turn the tide. The game of runs continued after that, with Rutgers-Newark scoring nine of the game's next 10 points to regain a three-point advantage at 54-51 with 9:41 to play. Gwynedd tied the contest at 54 with three free throws, and a Barneys three-pointer once again gave the Scarlet Raiders a three-point lead. Dunham responded with a layup for Gwynedd, and Shane Ford and Dunham hit back-to-back threes, and the Griffins quickly had another five-point advantage. Rutgers-Newark would never lead again, but tied the game at 62 and were within 73-71 with six seconds to go before Spencer sealed the championship with a pair of free throws with four ticks left. Gwynedd Mercy made 33-of-42 free throw tries (.786), and had a 34-27 advantage on the boards. Rutgers-Newark shot 54.3 percent from the floor in the game (25-46). Gwynedd Mercy ends the year 23-7 with the win, while Rutgers-Newark finishes 18-13.
